Do you like the idea of bigger nets in hockey?
Tue, September 25, 2007
Roberto Luongo says he'd quit the NHL if the league introduced larger nets.

There is no plan to do so but there was a lot of talk a couple of years ago as an idea to enhance offence.

Do you agree with Luongo? Have your say in our forum.

These topics always seem to get on to US and Canada and how its Canada's game. All you TRADITION guys. Do you know the Original 6 NHL teams. Do you know 4 are American and 2 are Canadian. Just wondering.

Yes I often say to myself. Wow those pads are amazing. They should be named MVP (most valuable pad)

what the hell is wrong with Betman???? Change the rules so faster skaters excel, limit goalie equipment size, shrink the jerseys and add a shootout, what more can be done to appease the American market? Nevermind everyone complaining of the size of the goalie as opposed to 20 years ago, the size of the player and the aggressiveness has increased overall. Let skill rule, we don't need 40 Crosby's or Ovechkin's in the league, or there will be no true superstars anymore.

Jimmy is right, the teams should be more concerned with a players stats, goals and assists than a players height and weight.

Daniel Briere is one of the most talented players in the league. He is listed as 5 '10 and 179 pounds. Who wouldnt want him on there team ?

Pads dont make great saves ? LOL. SO when a goalie slides on his side and stackes his pads that isnt a great save ? Of course it is!

The NHL has to get rid of the trap. Make all 3 forwards forecheck. If only 2 do give the team a penalty.

The nets are fine the way they are. If teams are so worried about scoring they need to draft more talented players like a Kyle Wellwood instead of the big grinding winger.

Any rule changes would effect all, who cares. He wouldn't quit, he's all talk. Johnny's right. Pads have grown to shrink the goal, so expand the goal. People like goals and they like great saves. Pads don't make great saves.

Funny, I don't see the problem with slightly larger nets. I don't want to see soccer nets out there but an extra 3-6 inches all around might work. Bettman is making lots of tweaks to the game to try and increase scoring and this is one thing that would do so without changing the heart of the game. Right now there are 2-6 shots per game that hit the post and these would now be goals.

These changes would still favour big guys like Luongo so I'm not sure what his issue is. His stats would be worse, so he couldn't approach Brodeur's career average anymore, but he could still be the best goalie in the league.

Maybe with bigger nets we'd stop having games decided by a skills competition and get rid of silly shootouts.

Wah Wah Wah! If that's all it takes to make someone like Luongo, who should be passionate about his sport, quit then good riddance.

I agree with the goaltender, let the game be what it is, this constant tweaking is taking away from the game, if they do anything get rid of the useless franchises in the States and give Winnipeg and Hamilton a franchise, sick of no shows from the patrons in the States........
