Can Gretzky coach?
Thu, September 20, 2007

Wayne Gretzky doesn't look or sound like someone who is ready to give up on coaching anytime soon.

Granted, the Great One is only heading into his third season as the head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes but a lesser man might have waved the white flag and moved on with life after hockey.

In two seasons under Gretzky's guidance, the Coyotes are 65-85-10 and missed the playoffs twice.

Will Wayne Gretzky ever reach greatness as a coach? Have your say in our forum.

Gretzky preaches patience

I think you made my point for me. If ever there was a team that should have won it all, it was the 2006 Canadian Olympic hockey team. It was Gretzky at the helm with a pretty sad result. He failed in quite spectacular fashion.

The test is not who could go to Phoenix and win, but who couldn't win with the talent pool available for the Olympic team - Gretzky apparently.

Great players don't necessarily make great coaches - Hockey Knowledge 101.

There have been teams in the past in all pro leagues that should have won but didnt. Wayne knew exactly the types of players it takes to win and that is who he hand picked for the team. Gretzky has a incredible mind for hockey, anyone who disagrees can tell the rest of us 1 coach that could go to Phoenix right now and win with that team. There are probably a few good teams in the AHL they could give the Coyotes a run for there money.

A "NERD" that is the all time points leader in the NHL.Me thinks henry's got a bad case of Gretzky envy.

Gretz has an unbelievable hockey mind. Phoenix isnt a very good hockey yeam right now. I would like to see what he could do with a top team like Ottawa.

Good luck this year Wayne, looks like another long year in the desert.

Wayne probably has the best hockey mind ever....and he can apply same to coaching. Players respect him. Give the man a chance.

He has the keen mind to teach youngsters the ropes, but I'm not sure of his level of discipline to get on these players is there. But then again, who going to fire him?

I do't know, can he? Didn't he coach that superteam that bombed in the olympics? if so, the answer is NO.

Jimmy:

There are many hockey people that could have done Gretzky's job in 2002 with the Olympic team given his supporting cast - Pat Quinn, Jacques Martin, Ken Hitchcock - and the talent pool he had to draw from. Even with all of that, how did he make out in 2006?

He was a great player but he is a very ordinary (possibly unqualified) coach.

gretzky is not a good coach.i guess he's bored of staying home all day with his wife and kids and has nothing else to do with his time.why not give the coaching job to someone who can use a paycheck.gretzky has millions and doesn't need the money.

Gretzky and Bobby Orr are the best. One coaches at the top level...the other at the beginer level...but both send the message of fun and team play
