Can Gretzky coach?
Thu, September 20, 2007

Wayne Gretzky doesn't look or sound like someone who is ready to give up on coaching anytime soon.

Granted, the Great One is only heading into his third season as the head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes but a lesser man might have waved the white flag and moved on with life after hockey.

In two seasons under Gretzky's guidance, the Coyotes are 65-85-10 and missed the playoffs twice.

Will Wayne Gretzky ever reach greatness as a coach? Have your say in our forum.

In Canada knocking Gretzky is sort of like knocking Mohammed in Saudi Arabia. But let's face it he should not be coaching. Coaching is not a good job for superstars. Coaches have to be pricks at times and how do you think being yelled at by hockey's equivalence to Jesus makes players who grew up idolizing the Great One feel.

Be a GM (a different kind of prick) or be an agent like Bobby Orr (the Great and Wise one) but give the guys a break and don't try to be Toe Blake.

Cut Gretzky some slack. The Coyotes dont have any good offensive players at all. I doubt that they could make the playoffs in the ahl.

Wayne Gretzky wants to be good NHL coach. It's tough becoming a successful coach in the NHL at the best of times. Coaching is a combination of management of time, situations and people. Good coaches usually undergo through an apprenticeship by coaching in the minors. This is beneath Wayne Gretzky. He would make an excellent NHL General Manager because I believe that he is better at assessing talent as long as he doesn't become prejudiced in selecting only his buddies.

I will give Gretz the benefit of the doubt. That Coyote hockey club is terrible. I dont even know if they could make the playoffs in the AHL.

Good luck Gretz it is looking like another long season in the desert.

When you assemble a team for the Olympics you dont always have the most talented players on it. You need role players as well for a checking line and to kill penalties. Sometimes the players dont always jell the way you hoped they would. To blame a GM for that isnt right. Gretzky wasnt on the ice or behind the bench. He picked who he thought at the time would make the best team. Hindsight is 20 / 20.

As for the Coyotes no I didnt make your point. Gretzky isnt responsible for drafting or making trades for there current roster. No coach could get that team into the playoffs, they dont have a 100 point or even a 40 goal scorer.

Gretzky "picked both teams".You mentioned in your post that "if there ever were a team that should have won it it would be the 2006 team".By that comment you must mean that it was a talented team.So as a GM ,he did his job well with both teams, but unfortunatly the players did not show up in 2006.As good as a GM or coach is ,the players are the one's that win.

Micheal:

So he gets credit for the 2002 Olympic win but doesn't take responsibility for the 2006 disaster? I don't think so!

Ray:

Your post assumes that Gretzky can coach. That is not a given. He was a great player - possibly the greatest of all time - but the jury is out on his coaching abilities.

Sure you mention 2006 team but what about the 2002 team ? No one is prefect and will be unfeated as a coach no matter who you are. So Gretzky is 1 - 1. Lets fire him and never let him have anything to do with an olympic team ever again. Growing up I didnt like Gretzky when he was getting his 200 points a year in Edmonton, I thought he was a hot dog. After he was traded to the KINGS and still put up very good numbers with less talent I gained alot of respect for him.

The question should be does Gretzky have a good enough team to be a successful coach. Can he make a ordinary team better?Quite possibly. One question to the posts out there.Whats the reason why the Coyote's would not put together a team that would be more likely to succeed with The Great One at the helm?
Ray, 2007-09-22 23:10:56

The 2006 Canadian Olympic hockey team was a good team and Gretzky was involved with the selection but unfortunately he didn't coach it or play in it.
