Will the Leafs make the playoffs?
Wed, September 26, 2007

The Toronto Maple Leafs are skating into the NHL season with a new mindset and it is going to make a difference.

A year ago, they set their collective goal low. They talked about having to plug away in a dogfight for a playoff spot and, with injuries playing no small role, they fell just short for the second year in a row.

Leafs keep familiar cast

I've been a Leaf fan all my life. Funny thing is, I just got my pic taken with the cup thanks to Andy McDonald of Strathroy. Thanks Andy, but every new season brings hope. The players feel they can do it. The fans that go to the ACC need to step up and support our team. Make some noise, players love that. I know it was a Disney movie, but the lousy Mighty Duck won. We all love the underdog to win. Well maybe it's the Leafs year. Stranger things have happened!

Why keep asking this question? NO, they won't .. it's time people stop thinking of the Leafs as a real hockey team ... they have not been since: 1967 1967 1967

Jeff

I have 2 words for you, salary cap. The Leafs overpaid for most of there players including Sundin, McCabe, Kubina, Belfour(left I know,). They need someone to do a better job of negotiating contracts because its obvious JFJ cant do it. Kubina isnt worth $ 5 million a year maybe half of that, McCabe isnt a $ 6 million plus a year d-man, he is a power play specialist, he is lost in his own end and takes alot of stupid penalties. Sundin isnt a $ 5.5 million a year player, his best days are behind him.

So when JFJ overpays the McCabes and Kubina's there is less money left to sign good quality free agents so thats why we see the Marlie players in Leaf uniforms when they wouldnt get a sniff back when there wasnt a salary cap.

I don't think it looks good on paper.Mabye Maurice could pull them together.GM Ferguson not doing a capable job.

with McCabe playing 30 minutes a game, leafs have no chance.

He is the "U" in useless. But the Leafs will try and they will be entertaining but they will not make the playoffs.....not even close

I am a huge frustrated Leafs fan....This years team will be no different. Every year when I look at the lineup I wonder "how can these so called profesionals involved with this team sit down, choose these players and actually think they have a decent team" Ian White, Bates Battaglia, John Pohl, Steen, Wellwood, Gill, Kilgar, Belak....these guys had a regular shift last year.....White was playing on the power-play some times. These guys are middle of the road AHLers at best...I don't get it !!!!! I think we get laughed at by other coaches with our selections....are these guys Maurices own little projects that he thinks he has groomed and taught to be NHLers. Somebody please help me here !!!!!! What are these Leafs brass thinkin????

What those suffering Leaf fans have to realize is that their team is no different than many others in the league who have had to wait almost as long (and in one case - Chicago - longer) for another cup. It was a lot easier back when there were 6 teams and only 4 made the playoffs. Two series wins and you were champs. Now you're competing with 29 other franchises and you have to win 16 - assuming you even qualify in the Top 8 in each Conference. Since Toronto's last win, just 15 different franchises have won (Montreal 10; Edmonton 5; The Islanders 4; Devils and Detroit 3 each; Boston, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Colorado 2 times each; and one apiece for Calgary, Rangers, Dallas, Tampa, Carolina, and Anaheim).

You can lay the blame for the recent failures at the feet of the executives and GM if you wish, and I suppose there's plenty of reason to find fault, but the fact remains, it's going on 41 years since your last win and none of these guys were around, what? seven years ago and beyond?

I hate the leafs but since both the sabres and the Habs are going to be worse this year I think that they do better this year. Better but there isn't a chance in hell that they are going to win the cup.

The cup will be won out west again in 2008.
