Will the Leafs make the playoffs?
Wed, September 26, 2007

The Toronto Maple Leafs are skating into the NHL season with a new mindset and it is going to make a difference.

A year ago, they set their collective goal low. They talked about having to plug away in a dogfight for a playoff spot and, with injuries playing no small role, they fell just short for the second year in a row.

Leafs keep familiar cast

The Leafs will do their usual early tease through to about mid-November, and then their lack of depth, coupled with the inevitable injuries and a leaky D and mediocre goaltending will do them in, and by the New Year they will be back in the thick of the Michael Vick dog fight involving eight teams this time around (even Washington will be in the mix). When it’s all over there will likely be something like 10 points separating 9 to 16. Tampa would be favoured for 8th, but without Boyle to start the season they could be too far back by the time he returns to bolster a D that is thin even with him there. Boston will be a bit better under Julien, but ultimately not good enough as they, too, are thin on D. The Habs, despite solid goaltending, are still too small up front, while Atlanta and the Islanders will be nearer the bottom rungs of the lower eight. I see Florida creeping into 8th this time around.

The first three spots will go to the Rangers, Ottawa and Carolina - likely in that order. Pittsburgh should grab 4th (unless Crosby's groin injury lingers, then it's probably 6th or 7th), New Jersey 5th, Buffalo 6th, Philadelphia 7th.

Yes!

After seeing the high lights from the Leaf / Sabre game last night I doubt it. The Leafs look like the Leafs usually do, horrible in there own end and too slow to keep up with the younger faster Sabres.

Sundin is another year older and the defence is still a joke.

If JFJ has any common sense he will let Sundin go this summer and trade McCabe before the deadline and go after Heatley and Redden this summer.

Break Stanley out of the Hall of Fame and have a parade on Oct.2nd cause that's as good as it's gonna get for the leaFs again.

Not with Sundin(the floater). his best +/- was the year after he made captain and he has been going downhill ever since. Last year he finished with a -2.. brutal

Of course they'll make the playoffs. The Dynamic Duo of Sundin and Blake will run away with the scoring race and Toskala is a shoo-in for the Vezina. All that remains is to finalize the route for Stanley Cup victory parade.

Lol, playoffs... what a joke... If the Habs won't make it, the Leafs definitely won't make it!

Why does anyone even care about the Leafs? Cheer a real team like the Sens.

Might I remind you they've been around for like 15 years and they've actually been in a Stanley Cup final.

The Leafs are good for one thing though: celebrity golf tournaments.

Couldn't care less...for the same reason that I don't watch TSN, I don't read SLAM sports...there are more things important the habitual losing team of the leafs.

I hate to say it but I hope so for leaf fans, the leafs are in the news all the time anyway so at least making the playoffs will give some validity to them.
