Can the NFL do more about injuries?
Tue, September 11, 2007

"See what you hit," reads the sign affixed to the walls of all 32 NFL locker-rooms along with a picture of a tackle being made with the head down.

Around the picture is a circle with a diagonal line, the international symbol for "not allowed."

Replays show Kevin Everett, a special teams player for the Buffalo Bills, appeared to see what he was hitting when he tackled Denver's Domenik Hixon on the opening kickoff of the second half against Denver on Sunday.

Still, it still didn't prevent him from incurring a severe spinal injury.

So, what can the NFL do about these types of injuries? Is educating players through signs enough? Or should every player go through training on how to safely make a tackle? Have your say.

No the NFL cant do much about injuries. The players are bigger, stronger and faster so the impact between 2 players will be greater with an injury more likely. I agree though with FTR that serious injuries arent more common than they are, especially on running plays where there is a pile of many players and all that weight not injuring someone on the bottom.

FTR, hockey is the best game on earth, football is second lol.

Football is a tough violent game at times...all within the rules. These unfortunate injuries are going to happen from time to time. Actually it is quite amazing when you think about it, with the amount of given plays in a NFL/CFL season...that it does not happen more often. I think that says tons about the safety of the equipment, players tackling knowledge, and their tough physical skills as true athletes. It is the greatest sport on earth!

I will agree with Jimmy, it was a fluke injury. I played football also and one of the first things we were taught was never tackle using your head.

I hope he is able to walk out of the hospital, that would be great!

Good luck Kevin.

No I dont think so. That play where the Buffalo player was injured was a fluke. There will always be injuries in contact sports like footabll and hockey. It was a improper way to make a tackle, you dont use your head I was taught that at the pee wee level. I do feel sorry for him and hope he makes a full recovery.

Contact sports.....it's the chance you take ....Rugby's a little to touchy-feely-grabby for grown men to be playing.Mabye incorporate with wrestling.

According to reader Jim Antaya, you are only a football fan if you leave your kids in your idling pickup truck all day. True, the question shows a lack of knowledge with respect to the game of football, but that has little in common with the environment or daycare.

Reader Jeff's message to Kevin Everett, a man who may never walk again, is to "Suck it up?" Thoughtless remark.

PARNEY, 2007-09-12 08:34:28

It's a collision sport. Suck it up.

Absolutley brutal question! Who's came up with this, let me guess they drive a hybrid... and think we should have a national day care program!
