Were Materazzi's comments inappropriate?
Sat, August 18, 2007

MILAN, Italy (AP) - Italy defender Marco Materazzi has finally disclosed what he said to Zinedine Zidane in the World Cup final that provoked the former France midfielder to retaliate with a head-butt.

Were Materazzi's comments about Zidane's sister appropriate?

Mental distractions happen on the field. These distractions can come from anywhere or from anyone. It is the real world class players that don't let these distraction get them off their game. Zidane's reaction to Materazzi's comment really showed that he wasn't a world class player. To respond to Barry's comment: If France wasn't awarded a cheap penalty kick, the score would have probably been 1-0 in Italy's favor.

Trash talking has always been part of alot of sports, if not all sports, and it is done at all levels. Get off it,the guy was an idiot for listening and reacting to it. Heat of battle, and he lost.

trash talk has always been part of the game,if we like it or not that's another debate.a player of zidane's experience should not of reacted in that manner but keep on playing and score or set up a goal that's the best way to get back at him for what i saw of the game i find that the comment materazzi made wasn't that bad it's not like he attacked his religion or his race.i think that materazzi did the right thing to get under the best player's (zidane) skin that put france out of the world cup ....way to go zidane!!!!!!

If Zindane is so sensitive that he can't take a comment like that, he should not play competitive sports.Water polo might be a option because you can't trash talk underwater.Seems like Materazzi's comment was a response to something Zidane said to him.Flying Tackles are a little different than name calling.

Although I couldn't care less about France, Italy's Marco Materazzi has forever placed an asterisk next to his team's world cup soccer victory. By referring to Zinedine Zidane's sister as a whore during the world cup match, Materazzi managed to get Zidane to retaliate with a head butt into his chest. A real man wouldn't stoop to this low class move which reminds me of the flying tackles perpetrated on Brazil's Pele in order to give inferior opponents a chance. By using underhanded methods to remove France's captain and arguably best all around soccer player of all nations, Italy exposed themselves as cheaters. By all rights the world cup would have been won by France hands down.

No of course not. Unfortunately sometimes players lose there cool and start the trash talk, trying to get there opponents off there game. Usually they say things about there opponents and if they dont get a reaction then they start in on your family. Trash talk shouldnt be allowed but the refs cant be everywhere and hear everything thats said on the field, court, ice.

Its pretty low to go after a players family like that.

Materazzi probably in all likeihood doesnt even know Zidane's sister.

There shouldnt be any room in sports for trash talk but there really isnt a way to stop all of it if its just 1 players word against anothers.

The bottom line is thats its poor sportmanship as far as I am concerned.

They were most likely very inappropriate, vile, and offensive. Though, in sports, many comments are made just to rile up and distract the opposition, for which he was successful in achieving and thus won. That does not make it right. Unless of course, Zidane's sister in fact is a prostitute and Materazzi had visited her to make a decision on his preferences. Though, of course, this would still make it irrelevant to the game at hand...
