What's the best match you ever saw?
Sun, August 19, 2007

Usually, it’s long after you’ve assumed the position on a bar stool and have somehow managed to have blown your cover and exposed yourself as a being guilty of being a sportswriter. That’s when somebody will ask you the damn question: “What’s the greatest game you ever covered?”

My answer has always been the same. “Sorry. Can’t do it. Covered too many to name one.”

Sun Media writers recall the greatest sporting event they have ever witnessed

I am too young for the 72 summit series although I have seen the high lites.

I have three picks: the 1987 Canada Cup, 2002 mens hockey team and the Blue Jays back to back world series.

Jacques Villenue winning the F1 title is also something I remember vividly.

The Blue Jays first World Series win is up there on my rankings, too.

If I may, I would like to add another favorite, in hockey. No one who wasn't there will likely remember this one, but in 1969 our national team was made up of true amateurs. We took on the mighty Russians at Maple Leaf Gardens. Bill Stephenson was in the nets for the Nats, and gave up two early in the first, but then the team settled down, and played their hearts out. Fabulous hockey. They shut down the big red machine, and tied the game. The Gardens was SRO, and no one sat down for the whole third period. "Go CANADA, Go!" what a noise! Fran Huck bagged the winner late in the third with a knuckler from the blue line that eluded Tretiak's glove, and the whole building just went wild. I'll never forget that one. It was a preview of the Henderson goal that came three years later, but these kids were genuine amateurs, not our best pros, so in my books, that made it a bigger win.

I was 8 when the 1972 Canada-Russia series took place. I was going to a small, rural school and in Grade 4.

The school let us watch the last game at least (maybe even the last few games) instead of being in class.

That was how important it was at the time.

The whole nation stopped.

Without a doubt, that day in 1998 when Dale Earnhardt Sr. finally won the Daytona 500!!! There will never be another driver that earned the respect and admiration of all the others on and off the track.

2002 Olympic Gold Medal Hockey Game, Canada 5 USA 2. An exciting game with an entire country rooting for the victors!

I have two:

1989 Grey Cup.

1987 Canada Cup.

I was only 2 during the 72 series.

Henderson scores!!!!!!!!. For any Canadian, that has and always will send shivers up your spine...Sports fan or not, truly the greatest moment in Canadian sports history.

I saw all the games listed and many other exciting ones. The New Year's Eve 1975 match between the Red Army and the Canadiens is my favourite. I'm forever grateful that my girlfriend at the time was ill, enabling me to see the game instead of attending a party.
