What's your reaction to the Nolan situation?
Fri, August 17, 2007

Believing he was subjected to a "racist comment" and "treated like a criminal" a native-Canadian hockey player wants answers why he was "harassed" and denied entry into Canada at a border crossing this week.

What everybody wants to know is what it was about Brandon Nolan that border officers at the crossing at the Ivy Lea Bridge, between Brockville and Kingston, didn't like?

Ted Nolan's kid felt humiliated

Those border guards should be relieved of their positions. Even if they have no idea of whats going on in their job and what card means what, they should still treat people with respect. What ever happened to inocent till proven guilty???

If i were not allowed back into the country where i was born, those border guards would be looking for emergency dental work without a doubt...

Obviously Kevin R is a white guy who will never experience racism. I'm surprised he doesn't get a job as a border crossing guard - yeah they may have challenging jobs but ignorance is ignorance and its alive and well in this country. I do have to ask - just what exactly did Native people do to your ancestors or to yourself - what was that reprehensible thing that happened to you that has made you want to make us all assimilate and disappera as civilizations and cultures - exactly what was it??

Growing up next to a reserve, I've seen lots of examples of discrimination from non-native people to natives AND vice-versa. It is a two way street, but unfortunately harassing the First Nations People seems "socially acceptable" in Canada (they're OUR minority so it's okay). Insecure people will always find someone to denigrate in order to make themselves feel superior. Using race is still a convenient outlet. Disturbing and saddening, but true. I hope this is a big wake up call for all Canadians to become a better country and to set a good example instead of letting a "little racism" slide.

*yawn* another Nolan complaining and whining about 'racism'. Geez this getting _so_tiresome. So predictable.

Y'know what I worked for the CDN government, married a foreigner (all VERY legally) and I own land in the US (northern NY) - and still there are times I'm hassled at both borders. But I know that I am fully within the laws - I'm patient and wait and things finally get resolved. I've waited two or three hours, been grilled on my wife's status and y'know what? IT'S PART OF LIFE. These guys, while sometimes obnoxious and wrong (I've actually had one apologize to me after a two hour wait) have a VERY difficult job to do - imagine if you worked at a convenience and you had to imagine that EVERY possible person is a murderer... that's what they are charged with doing - protecting the borders... if feelings get hurt (as mine have) so be it as long as it helps them protect both countries.

We just returned from Denmark through the US. This is typical treatment that travellers are subjected to at border crossings. I get the impression that border guards have special classes in how to be obnoxious. I don't think it is necessary, but then again, maybe some travellers deserve it.

What kind of official document allows a picture of an individual wearing a ball cap?

As a fellow Canadian living in the US I can relate...crossing can sometimes be a stressful situation. However I think the Canadian Border guards are wrong on this one...we'll see

ignorance, there is a small percentage of the population who are racist. We as a society cannot accept this behaviour. It is about time the people of Canada of all colours band together and settle all differences, land claims included.Show the world that there is a country willing to put differences aside for the betterment of man.Let's be an example for the world to be proud of.This kind of behavior should not and will not be tolerated. Lets all stand side by side. We are all Canadians. The greatest country on the planet. eh!

Yes, give one of our own a hard time. Another example of how bad an over-haul our needs. Can`t wait to hear the conclusion of this one.
