What's your reaction to the Nolan situation?
Fri, August 17, 2007

Believing he was subjected to a "racist comment" and "treated like a criminal" a native-Canadian hockey player wants answers why he was "harassed" and denied entry into Canada at a border crossing this week.

What everybody wants to know is what it was about Brandon Nolan that border officers at the crossing at the Ivy Lea Bridge, between Brockville and Kingston, didn't like?

History speak for itself we are “THE FIRST NATION’S who lived on this land you call Canada. We own it! That is why you pay the taxes. In a PERFECT WORLD then only can all colours band together and that’s the problem with this country it ruled by a country without colour. Now I don’t know the whole scoop 'bout this situation but I know that our border system stinks and yes you can dissect the situation all you want but the truth is it was handled very badly this person who represents us was not just another Tom Dick or Harry he showed all his documents especially a status card of his native land!!!! And yeah it gets _so_tiresome. So predictable to hear your comments.

Fire the border guards

These racist officials should not only be fired for this, they should be made an example of so that all border officials will think twice about treating a Canadian citizen like this.

Kevin R is a disgrace to Canada!! What an idiot.

Now on to important matters. It is disgraceful what happen to Brandon, how about we change the sign at the Canadian border to read Welcome to the KKK. It's 2007 and that ignorant, backwoods attitude still exists....mind blowing!!!!

Conrad, what exactly did I do to you and your people that gives you the right to not pay taxes and get free education that is not available to me? Why do I and the rest of non-native Canadians owe you something? I don't think anyone is saying we want your civilization to disappear (although I'm sure some ignorant people may feel that way). I am saying I think all Canadians should be treated equally. Our current system is severely flawed and a lot of frustration and anger towards Natives in our country stem from this type of privileged treatment. We are all Canadian, so why don't the same rules apply to all of us?

Racism has no place in our society or country, and if Mr. Nolan was given a hard time and comments were made regarding his minority status (as is mentioned in this article) then I hope those guards are dealt with accordingly.

I know what would happen to me if I pulled up to the border with any car bearing US plates, bringing it home to Canada.

It wouldn't matter what colour I am or what kind of car it was and because I'm white you wouldn't read about it in ANY Canadian newspaper. You need to forward the paper work for an American car to the border about a week in advance and then you pay duty on it.

A country that doesn't recognize race or religion, only nationality. What a concept!

Read with interest what happened to Brandon Nolan at the border.

Now, I'm not native or a visible minority. I have been working overseas so I do travel quite a bit around the world. Without a doubt the worst treatment I get is arriving back home! People’s comments that Canadian Border Services has a tough job…Just doesn’t wash.

Whether it is travelling to the US, the UK, Europe, Africa, the Middle East or Asia, I am treated with respect and courtesy. Only when I arrive back home am I treated somewhat like a criminal. Even Homeland Security in the US is easier to deal with.

I have witnessed some shocking scenes at airport arrivals in Ottawa and Montreal. One time the "Victim" was a Canadian Forces soldier travelling on a Green Passport returning from overseas. The treatment he received was appalling and shameful.

I do hope this triggers a complete review Canadian Border Services, they need to review their processes, hiring practices and training.

I don't know what the problem is with our Border guards. I remember being stopped and harrassed with my family in 1982 for shopping in the states. It was my mother, sister and myself and we're white yet they still thought we were treated like some kind of criminals for buying a little too much over the border. They search everything and everywhere and stopped short of a strip search. They also stole a baseball clock I had bought with my own money. We left the goods there and left it up to a bad experience. maybe the rules should be reviewed about CANADIANS coming back into their own freakin' country. This isn't America and for that matter when crossing the Americans give us more respect coming and going then our own people so what is that all about?

I feel bad for what happened here. But let's not paint everyone with the same brush. Labeling the actions of a few as being the thoughts of the majority is no better than what these border guards perpetrated on young MR. Nolan.

We have to start treating each other with respect and start living by the same rules and regulations. When that happens incidents like this will cease to occur.

I am a Canadian living in the USA and I can honestly say that you need to kiss the a## of the border guards. Most of the officers are people who could not get into a police program so they need to get their powertrip somewhere else. When my family and I cross into either country we have all the proper doc's, give simple answers, and only respond to what is asked. Mind you what kind of offical doc's allow you to wear a bb cap. Either way the officers are wrong on this one.
