What's your reaction to the Nolan situation?
Fri, August 17, 2007

Believing he was subjected to a "racist comment" and "treated like a criminal" a native-Canadian hockey player wants answers why he was "harassed" and denied entry into Canada at a border crossing this week.

What everybody wants to know is what it was about Brandon Nolan that border officers at the crossing at the Ivy Lea Bridge, between Brockville and Kingston, didn't like?

Ted Nolan's kid felt humiliated

Ted, are you a member of the media, or a politician? Nice spin on Claudia's comment. She specified Caledonia Indian, not Indian in general.

I agree there are people too racist they don't even know it, and that's just sad. I hope that Nolan's account is right on the money, because the Canadian Border guards are a joke on a power trip, and these arrogant fools need a slap for a wake up call.

Ted Richards (the educated white man)claims racism.Ted have you ever heard of "To the victor goes the spoils".Calling the race card because people of our generation get upset when the aboriginals blockade roads and bridges is lost in focus. We throw money at corrupt aboriginal governments and it does not solve their problem.Sometimes bad things happen ,but its not about racism or prejudice its about stupidity.Every culture to a extent, has or will be stereotyped(Irish.British.French.Pakistani.Arab.Scottish.Mexicans.Russian.Asians.),to name a few.As a educated white man you should try not to be so sensitive.Remember your educated white ancestors were the victors.

Let’s all dress up as clowns. Enter an "I'm better than everybody else" contest. Try to get as much attention as we can knowing that we will all lose in the long run.

Some of you people are so racist and don't even know it, which is, of course, why this problem is not going away any time soon.

I am white, but an educated white man, one that studied the treaties and the history of our country from pre-contact to now in great depth. Some of that history is great, some sickening.

It's frustrating to read some of the comments like "Indians escalate the hostilities with their attitudes and antics". It shows such a deep and utterly offensive lack of understanding about a culture that it almost makes me sick as a proud Canadian. I guess it would be fair to say you kill prostitutes and fed them to pigs in BC, too, because you are white.

If you think that is a ridiculous comment, then why do you feel fine painting all First Nations people with the same brush? It's just as ridiculous, and if you don't get that, then maybe you are a lost cause.

Maybe the border patrol officers felt the same way as you, that "they" are a certain way. It's not unlikely. I'll wait until the facts come out, but I would have no reason to doubt Brandon Nolan, based on what I see here and in everyday life.

As usual, this has been blown out of proportation by the media. I would like to hear both sides of the story before assuming all blame should be directed at the border guards. People of all ages and races have been known to be beligerent and non cooperative with border guards. Also, the border guards have been under severe criticism for their so called loose policies of entry. That said, there is no excuse for lack of professionalism and respect when dealing with any person crossing the border.

To the person who said the 1st Nations people own the land...lose that idea quick...everyone on this planet came from somewhere...including 1st nations peoples. You have no more rights (or no less) than any other Canadian citizen. Historically, people and cultures have migrated around the world, some peacefully and others not so peaceful. 1st nations peoples also migrated and not always peacefully. I too am tired of being held ransom by a few extreme people, whom I question their real motives.

the entire border service should be fired and replaced by a private contract firm...you see this civil service nonsense from all of canada's beaurocracies

Typical of Canadian Border Guards. I had a run in with them just last week and he was aboriginal border guard.Racism against whitey or just a idiot.
O'Neill, 2007-08-17 17:58:42

I read his comments and although he had lots of US ID I didn't see any mention of proof of Canadian ID. The status cards I've seen don't have a picture and would not qualify as a proof of residency or citizenship. There is however no excuse for some of the comments that were made or rude behaviour. I'd like to hear the other side of the issue.

to GlennS,

I am a teacher and it saddens me that another educator has not helped you with your knowledge and understanding of the British North American act nor the numerous treaties that were signed with to allow First Nations people rights that non-Native people have. It's not what you have done to Conrad, but rather what your Government has agreed to in a treaty and agreements that have no expiry date.

Educate yourself Conrad.

In regards to the Nolan case, it does not surprise me that this occurred. This occurs everwhere in society from Tim Horton's to Wal-Mart, Chretiens 'White' Papers, to the Border Guard. If you have no experience with this and are wondering what the big fuss is all about and everyone should just get over it - consider yourself fortunate. It's not enjoyable.

I'm Canadian and I travel to the states a lot for business. If I take a plane the US customs leaving are the rude ones and coming back to Canada is always pleasant. BUT if I am in my car and headed to the states the US customs are very polite and efficiient, it's when I come back that the Canadian customs agents need a lesson in civility. Now they have guns, that should crank up the power trip to 11.

They are not above the law, they still have to treat citizens with respect, we pay their salaries and they can be sued just like evryone eles. I see it heading that way.
