Is Becks more pop star than player? Sun, March 9, 2008
Pele is not impressed with Becks. The legendary soccer superstar has blasted David Beckham as being "more pop star than player" in his belated season with the L.A. Galaxy, which is scheduled to play Toronto FC at BMO Field on Sunday.
Beckham is nursing a sore ankle and did not accompany the team to Dallas yesterday for a Superliga tournament game against FC Dallas. And he is not likely to play against Toronto.
It's soccer. Who cares?

He's a soccer player. I think being soft just sort of goes with the territory.

As you will see from this Sunday's game in Toronto, the female attendees will quite outnumber the males, no doubt. Really though, can his 'pop star' image really hurt the world of soccer, if anything it will bring more interest to the game, which in Canada is quite lacking in my opinion.
I've actually questioned whether this was the intent all along, to stir up publicity. Do they really care if he can play or not? Time will tell.

Pele, from what the article quotes him as saying, is not knocking Beckham for being soft. He is more or less questioning his focus on the game at the time.
As for whether he is soft or not, he is probably soft if compared to most North American sports athletes (hockey, basketball, football). But in soccer, he is one of the tougher guys. Don't laugh --- he is one of the most competitive guys in a sport that is full of divers, whiners and actors. And that is coming from an avid soccer fan who is sick of seeing divers sucker the refs in every game.
