Can the Jays catch the Wild Card? Tue, August 14, 2007
The newfound optimism around the Toronto Blue Jays triggered by a season-best five-game winning streak proves that hope springs eternal, even amid the hard realities of baseball in August.
Fans on radio-call in shows pumped by the recent surge and sportscasters who should know better are calling them a contender again, a description that ignores the cold, hard facts the team is facing.
This late in the season, 7 games out of a wild card spot, it's a tough battle, especially since it's a 'log jam' in the wild card standings currently.
Jays fans can be optimistic next season due to a pitching staff that will be anchored by Halladay and hopefully a healthy A.J. Burnett and filled out by Marcum, McGowan and possibly Litsch, if Chacin doesn't regain his command in the off-season. The bullpen is strong and if B.J. Ryan can regain his form, it will be even stronger.
Give this team a chance. They'll all be back next year, including the likes of Troy Glaus who everyone seems to want to trade away. This is a guy that can be counted on (when healthy) to put up great offensive numbers.
Remember, at the beginning of the season, the Jays rotation included the likes of Zambrano and Ohka, both of which have been thankfully released. Towers is finished, the past two seasons have proved that.
The young pitching staff will be the key to next year. Let's hope the 'sophmore jinx' does not come into play.

I expect that the team that wins the wild card will need approximately 93 wins. The Jays would have to go 33-11 in their remaining 44 games. This is not impossible but it is unlikely. I really would like to give credit to the jays pitching staff. They are hot right now.

No I doubt it since they can only win at home. If they can some how get a winning streak going on the road they may have a slight chance but it doesnt look good.

Troy Glaus is making $ 16,000,000 this year thats why they couldnt trade him at the deadline. Nobody will pay that kind of money for an injury prone 3rd baseman having a dreadful season.

Troy Glaus is making $11 1/2 million in 2007 FYI.

Put it this way, the Jays have a better shot at the wild card than the Leafs have of making the playoffs next year...
GO JAYS!

Since no pitchers want to come to Toronto via the freeagent route maybe they can trade for 1 or 2 in the off season.
Also Troy Glaus has been a huge disappointment this year. He seems injury prone and at I believe at $ 16,000,000 a year they can find a better third baseman than him.
Vernon Wells and Frank Thomas havent had good years either. Add that and the slow start the pitching got off to and they were done before the all star break.
I guess there is always next year ( the theme in Blue Jay land since JP came here ).

The Blue Jays will be out of the race soon enough.
But there are some positives.
They've got some really decent young pitchers: Marcum, Accardo, McGowan, Litsch, Jansen and League.
I feel that when they are for sure out of it, they should give a lot more playing time to Curtis Thigpen and Adam Lind and bring up a couple of prospects.
Then in the off-season they can trade Burnett and BJ Ryan to get a really good outfielder and catcher.

If the Jays can get their bats going, get Burnett back in the line-up, they've got a shot.

Yes I think the Jays are done. The pitching wasnt good enough at the beginning of the season and they fell too far behind to play catch up. Now the pitching and the hitting are getting the job done but how long can the pitching hold up for ? In the off season when JP couldnt sign any free agent pitchers he signed Thomas hoping to improve the offence which he really hasnt done. I guess JP's thinking was if he couldnt improve the pitching he would improve the offence and win by scoring a lot of runs. Maybe it was a good idea at the time but now we see it didnt work. The pitching staff isnt good enough after Haliday.
Ohh well hockey season is just around the corner lol.
