Can the Jays catch the Wild Card?
Tue, August 14, 2007

The newfound optimism around the Toronto Blue Jays triggered by a season-best five-game winning streak proves that hope springs eternal, even amid the hard realities of baseball in August.

Fans on radio-call in shows pumped by the recent surge and sportscasters who should know better are calling them a contender again, a description that ignores the cold, hard facts the team is facing.

Streak puts Jays in chase

The Jays never really had a chance this year with there pitchers getting off to such a lousy start of the season.

The only way they will make the playoffs in the future is if both the Yankees and Red Sox suffer injuries to there star players and miss alot of games.

New York and Boston will always have the advantages when it comes to signing big name free agents. The Jays need to draft pitchers because none want to sign as free agents with them.

When Wells, Glaus and Thomas all have average years at the plate the Jays didnt stand a chance.

Good luck next year Blue Jays, you are going to need it.

They're out of it now.

It's sad how, even during the summer, we constantly hear about hockey.

On CFMJ (640 AM in Toronto) they have a show everyday about the Maple Leafs and NHL hockey - even during the summer!

I love hockey the most of all sports, but people should give it a rest.

Back to the topic.

As long as New York and Boston are big spenders, Toronto will never be able to compete.

The Blue Jays have been so inconsisent this year they dont deserve the wild card spot. At the start of the year the pitching was horrible and the hitting was good, now the pitching has come around and the hitting has been horrible.

I guess there is always next year.

This should be the final nail in there coffin, getting swept at home by another 500 team. Now they cant win at home or on the road. I believe they scored under 10 runs in this series against the A's. Thats pathetic for a team that thinks they are in the wild car race.

Ohh well hockey starts in about 5 weeks.

Go Leafs Go

When the Jays cant beat the Royales, Orioles, Devil Rays I say they dont deserve to be in the playoffs.

Those are teams the Jays should take at least 3/4 but they split or win 1/4.

Lets look to next year yet again eh J.P.

jays need to be better offensivly and they need to have good pitching from other than marcum and halliday they all got to step up and to see how bad they want that wild card

What kills me about this team is that every once in awhile you'll hear, "The Jays win three straight", so you think, right on, they're making ground.

And then you find out they are still only two games over .500.

I don't get this team at all. I think they are a .600-type team, but can never get more than a few games above an even record. It's the mark of a terribly inconsistent team that will be watching the playoffs again this year.

According to ESPN (the worldwide leader in sports), Glaus is making $11 1/2 million this year.

CBS Sportsline says $10 1/2 million.

I would say very little chance. But they are still worth watching. Thanks Ryan for the hope next year.

If you can't beat Kansas City when you need to ... well, you can forget about putting together a streak significant enough to get you into a playoff position.
