Is this a good move by Kevin Lowe? Thu, August 2, 2007
Kevin Lowe believes his only responsibility is making the Edmonton Oilers a better hockey team, not to other general managers.
After adding forward Dustin Penner to his lineup Thursday, he thinks he's done that. Penner officially became a member of the Oilers when the Anaheim Ducks declined to match a US$21.25-million, five-year offer sheet. Even though some like Ducks GM Brian Burke criticized the move, Lowe didn't feel the need to make any apologies.
This is a desperation move by Lowe and nothing more. Penner IS NOT worth that kind of money. There must be someone better than Penner that Lowe could have signed to an offer sheet. No offence to Penner but he isnt a 40 or 50 goal scorer or an 80 - 90 point player. The Ducks would be nuts to match this offer. Lowe is really really desperate to sign anybody and this crazy offer sheet proves it.

This smacks of desperation to me. That much money for Dustin Penner? Is he really worth that? He's not Getlaf, and though he's a piece of the Stanley Cup puzzle, he would have anything close to the same impact on offence-challenged Edmonton. Don't be surprise if Burke lets this happen, and has a bit of a giggle.

Lowe is prying on Penner because the Ducks have the cap to worry about. For the first and second player like him, I would doubt B. Birke will match the offer. I think Lowe is also going after other RFA like Cammalleri since he has not come to term with the Kings. Priase from the Devils will be the next target.
With all these players in the line next season, the Oilers will be a completely different team with younger players competing alongside.
