Is this a good move by Kevin Lowe?
Thu, August 2, 2007

Kevin Lowe believes his only responsibility is making the Edmonton Oilers a better hockey team, not to other general managers.

After adding forward Dustin Penner to his lineup Thursday, he thinks he's done that. Penner officially became a member of the Oilers when the Anaheim Ducks declined to match a US$21.25-million, five-year offer sheet. Even though some like Ducks GM Brian Burke criticized the move, Lowe didn't feel the need to make any apologies.

Ducks part with Penner

Lowe you have to ask yourself. I will not give Ryan Smith the money he wants or deserves but will give this money to Penner ( good for Penner ) I would rather have Ryan for a bit more no offense Dustin played hockey with him and not a bad player but not a super star. He is getting the same money as Scott Hannan. Let's think about this people. This will not kill the NHL but it will not help the oil. Go avs

I have no problem with going after RFAs, the system is in place to do so and Lowe used it. And with the Oilers record in drafting lately, why not give up the picks and go for a sure thing. I just don't think Penner is a sure thing and that he is worth this kind of money. I would like to be wrong and have him mold into a Bertuzzi at his prime or Neely type of player, but we'll see.

The negative I see for the Oilers is crazy salaries like this perpetuate the players' argument that the teams can afford more. Also, it doesn't give the Oilers a marquee player they desperately need to lure others, such as Crosby in Pittsburgh.

This whole deal looks like a bandaid solution by a guy desperate to save his job.

This will NOT ruin the NHL. The key part of the CBA is the cap. And as long as a cap is there, it won't ruin teams or the league. All K-Lowe's offers do, are force GM's to be much smarter in signing their key players. This was a bold move by a bold GM to improve his team. All the ney-sayers are just upset that their GM doesn't have the balls to pull this off. And as for Burke's comments...well, he got Pronger for a bag of pucks (Lupul) and now he's whining that someone stole his player. BooHoo Brian. A good GM would have signed Penner long before it came to this. Dustin, welcome to Edmonton...GO OILERS!!!!

Inflationary salary Burke says? What about Todd Bertuzzi for 4M a season? How doesn't that affect the marketplace for the other 30 teams for a busted up has been?

Kevin Lowe is an idiot...a Gary Bettman clone.

Lowe looks kind of stupid here. He wouldn't sign their leader and an almost point per game player, Ryan Smyth for $5 1/2 million.

Yet he goes out and gives a kid who hasn't proven much, $4 million.

Really strange strategy to me.

Brian Burke is a fool. I like the guy, but he is a fool. He paid Bertuzzi, who is clearly on the downswing of his career,4 million a year and neglected Penners contract and now is whining because he didn't have the cap space to match Lowes offer. He has no one to blame but himself. It amazes me that some of you yokels are blathering on about how Lowe is overpaying for Penner when Burke paid the same for a guy who in the last few years has only proved that he is easily hurt. In a few years you morons will sing a different tune...Penner is acknowledged as one of the best up-and-commers in the league and will only get better. As for Joffrey Lupul, give your head a shake naysayers: Lupul was merely a throw-in in a trade made only because Pronger demanded it. Lupul was always a wait-and-see, and never a building block. Oh yes, and Jason Smith and Ryan Smyth: sentimentality doesn't win championships. Both are aging, beat-up and never got it done to begin with. Kudos Lowe, I look forward to this season.

All through the 90s Edmonton was basically a farm team for the rest of the NHL as we had player after player poached from us by the big market teams. Even if Penner falls a little short of the 4.25 million, it's nice to know that we can finally be the hunters instead of the hunted.

I think Lowe should have waited till next summer and gone after Dany Heatley. He is the best winger in the NHL right now. Also he is from Alberta so he may want to go home to play.

If Heatley turned them down, they could try Spezza. Next summer there are gonna be alot better players to choose from.

Penner isnt worth 4 million a year. Bad move.

Way to go, Kevin Lowe. Nice move. Hey Burke, do you want some cheese with that whine? You're the idiot who got yourself so close to the salary cap. So you win one Stanley Cup and everyone is supposed to stand by in awe?? Other owners have teams to run and will do what they need to in order to get their teams to your position. Grow up and deal with it. Personally, I am TOTALLY TOTALLY ECSTATIC that Kevin Lowe chose the Ducks to pull this on. Sweet justice!! And Burke's stupid attempt at being funny thinking that his draft picks will be worth anything is laughable. I will take great pleasure watching as that scenario unfolds this season. Bring it on!!!!!
