What's your reaction to violence in beer leagues? Fri, July 13, 2007
Former L.A. Kings forward Jared Aulin was the victim of a stick swinging attack in a Calgary non-contact rec summer hockey league.
Eight games into a stint in the Non Contact Hockey League's top division, the 25-year-old says he's likely played his last hockey game following a stick-swinging incident that landed him in the hospital with a concussion, swollen carotid artery and a pail full of painkillers.
"I'm done with it, which is sad," Aulin told the Sun prior to asking police to press charges.
I played in " beer leagues " for over 10 years and I never saw anything like a stick swinging incident. There have been fights yes, but 2 guys dropping the gloves and going toe to toe. This sticker swinger needs to be in a court of law trying to explain his actions. Hockey is a fast paced game with contact even though there isnt suppose to be any in the beer leagues. I for 1 have never had the thought of using my stick as a weapon. If I wanted to get someone back for something they did to me I would throw a body check at them.
This guy needs to be locked up, he easily could have killed that player or seriousily injured him. If something like that had happened out on the street he would be locked up, this isnt any different, a beer league is a bunch of buddies getting togther once a week to play hockey and have some fun with guys you dont see much anymore except on hockey night. Make an example out of him so this wont happen again.

Remember bad, bad Leroy Brown? Every dog has his day!
You just don't go around swinging your stick. That does not make you a tough guy. It makes you someone who deserves to be standing in front of a judge begging for your freedom!

For too many this becomes the only outlet for them to release that bottled up energy from the daily grind and they cant control it.
There's a million reasons why it can happend on the ice but for the most part it's from individuals who take the game way past what its intended to be
