What's your reaction to the Souray signing?
Thu, July 12, 2007

Veteran defenceman Sheldon Souray has signed a five-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers.

Is the Oiler's signing of Souray the first or last piece of their post-season puzzle?

Souray returns to Alberta

I love reading all the comments on here from the Oiler haters. Guaranteed they're either Flames, Leafs or Vancouver fans. Dummy up people, Oilers now have great one-two puck moving d-man on the back end, so whom do you think that is going to benefit? The forwards of course. The Oilers problem last year wasn't that they had no scoring punch, but no competent puck-moving defencemen. Now that they have that, Hemsky, Horcoff, Pisani and Stoll will have much more room to work with. and did I see someone say Lupul was a top scorer? Lupul was a flat-out bust and should have been moved earlier. Gotta love Lowe, gets nothing but flak for his so-called 'dirty deal' with Vanek then lands Souray a few days later. Hes not done yet though, he will try and add one more skilled scorer up front to round things out. Just watch, in a year or twos time, all the Lowe haters will be kissing his rear saying what a genius he is. Amusing.

As a MTLer I'm sad to see Souray go - whatever naysayers say - Souray didn't only pack a good offensive punch, but his leadership & strength in my opinion were stronger influences than even Koivu - (yes, I said it!) and this far outweighs his - 28 . He was the powerplay quarterback, tough defender of smaller players and a great leader - at least he's saying up north! All the best.

Hockey has lost it's lustre again, we went through a strike to get away from this free agent junk. Here we are get ting the wallets fatter, and no lolaty to your team. Good shot, terrible defencemen, bring back Odelien to Montreal far better stats, and not a money grabber, hmmm Edmonton remember Pronger.........

Overpaid. -28. More money than Smyth would have made, or Regehr, even Tanguay! Is this the price to pay to get someone to go to Edmonton?

Finally the Oilers got a player from the efforts of a terrible GM, he could have gotten Souray sooner had he been on top of his game, sounds like Souray fell into his lap, maybe the Flames won't kick the Oilers butt as much with better D

I'd love to see them scoop up Sopel now. That would be an awesome blueline.

I am sad to see him leave Montreal but happy that he is playing in Edmonton. The Oilers deserve some positive feedback for the team and the community. Tired of hearing about players leaving because their wives don't like the area.

Supposedly a highly coveted defenceman that wants to play on the west coast, isn't signed right away and then ends up with a team that is notorious for losing out on the big names. Something isn't right here. It sure seems nobody else wanted him and Edmonton was the only team to offer that type of money.

Definitely the first. Their D is relatively satisfactory now with Souray, Pitkanen and Smid and maybe the worst kept secret in the NHL is how badly the Oilers need a bona fide scorer - or two - to skate with Hemmer. Ales is good and WILL get better but he cannot do it alone. A #1 centre, some muscle - due Gators departure, - and another proven forward should round out the team nicely. Lowe has made some questionable calls in the past, like any given GM of any given sport, but we must not forget HE built a team that gave every Oiler fan a reason to live in the 2005-2006 campaign. Anything that happens once can happen twice.
