Will the Pens win the Cup in the next 5 years? Tue, July 10, 2007
The Penguins have signed Sidney Crosby to a five-year contract extension worth about US$45 million that will keep the star centre in Pittsburgh through the 2012-13 season.
“I really enjoy playing and living in Pittsburgh and I want to be here for a long time,” said Crosby. “Individual honours and scoring championships are great, but my No. 1 goal is to win the Stanley Cup. I’d love to be a part of bringing the Cup back here to Pittsburgh.”

I think so. They probably need to in the next three years, though, because some of those guys are going to start demanding top dollar in a few years. It's the same as when Mario was around, making 50 goal scorers out of guys like Rob Brown and Kevin Stevens, who subsequently got paid for their accomplishments.

I agree with Jimmy that the Penguins are piecing together a great team. With a supporting cast including Malkin, Staal, et al this team has a lot of potential. It may be a couple of years off or it may be sooner than expected that they hoist the cup. I've had the pleasure of seeing Sid the Kid live a few times and his skating strength (i.e. top speed after two strides) is amazing, he's creative with the puck, and has a great heart. And one more thing - the Penguin's organization has the greatest player of all time (sorry Wayne), other than maybe Bobby Orr, for all of the young players to look up to.

Yes I think the Penguins will win the cup in the next few years. Crosby is the best player in the NHL and also he has the heart of a lion. Watching him in his last year of junior I wasnt sure he would be this successful this fast. He is willing to take a hit to make a play and do anything to win. I see some Messier in him that when he sets his mind to do something nothing is going to get in his way to stop him. He plays like a bull loose in a china shop, he will take the puck to the net and go into the corners. He is very strong on his skates and hard to knock down and off the puck.
Congrats on the new contract Sid, you deserve it!
