Was passing on Esposito a mistake?
Sat, June 23, 2007

Did the Habs make a mistake by passing on Esposito? Did Bob Gainey do the right thing by taking Ryan McDonagh with his first pick? Why wasn't the 18-year-old snatched up earlier?

Have your say in our forum.

The Bruins made the mistake of not taking Esposito. The name alone would have brought interest back to the Bruins. Habs didn't make a mistake. I wouldn't draft a hometown boy either...

I am not a Habs fan but I have enough respect for Mr.Gainey that if he passes on a local boy he must have a good reason. Maybe he thinks it could be another Mike Riberio situtaion all over again and we all know what happened with him, he is now in Dallas. Montreal needs bigger, stronger forwards and I think maybe thats the way Mr.Gainey is going. We cant judge Esposito and Ryan McDonagh until they have played at least 3 - 5 years in the NHL.

It's hard to say at this moment.

Esposito could turn out to be a total bust and never make the NHL or he could be a first line player or somewhere a bit lower.

I'm not convinced Esposito is the real thing. But...if he was ever going to develop into an NHL star, it could be in Pittsburgh. The style of play there suits him well, and he may blossom in a way he never would have in Motreal anyway. With that said, if he does blossom, then fans in Montreal are going to freak out.

THE biggest mistake was JFJ trading away his first pick - again - for a goaltender who never got a sniff of ice-time in the playoffs for San Jose, and a forward who could still spend more time in jail than on the ice. And then he had to sit there and watch as the 13th pick (HIS original pick) came up with both Chereponov and Esposito still available. These were the kinds of players the team needed in order to conduct the rebuilding process he keeps talking about. Instead, he moved to solidify his position on 18th place. If anyone thinks this team can win a Stanley Cup then they are dreaming in technicolour.

What about Carolina? Or Los Angeles? Or San Jose? They all passed on him as well. Why is it Montreal is getting questioned? Because he is a local boy? Like Mike Ribeiro? Jose Theodore? Patrice Brisebois? The last time a team purposely chose a local boy was Edmonton choosing Mike Comrie...and look how that turned out.

Just because he is from Montreal and has skill doesn't mean they MUST take him. Montreal is loaded with offensively gifted youngsters working there way up. We needed depth on defense, and more physical players, and that is what we got.

I wish Angelo all the best, but Montreal shouldn't be getting slammed for this, the only reason it is a "surprise" is because the media needs something to talk about.

I hope as a 30 year habs fan i don't have to listen to this in the same lite as the: wickiniser/savard "flop".

i think we will and GM gainy will pay for it for years and years to come......

don't worry though when he (esposito)is in his twilite of his career montreal will again give up there future prospects for him..........

cheers, go pittsburg you lucky mothers'now and the future.
