Is this a good deal for the Leafs?
Fri, June 22, 2007

One year after trading with the Boston Bruins for Andrew Raycroft, Leafs' GM John Ferguson made another splash Friday, reeling in Vesa Toskala from the San Jose Sharks. Toskala, 30, has one year remaining on a contract that pays him only US$1.375 million.

Forward Mark Bell also comes in the deal for Toronto's 2007 or '08 first-round pick (that's San Jose's option), a 2007 second-round pick and a 2009 fourth-round selection. The Leafs went into Friday night's draft with the 13th overall selection.

3 draft picks for a 30 yr. old with one year left on his contract and an overpaid forward.I guess the goal isn't to rebuild but to squeeze into that last playoff spot.

Not a 'bad' trade. How many goalies in the past 10yrs won a cup before they were 30? Enough with that already, he's in his prime and he proved it last year having to split time. Raycroft stinks and JFJ knows it. Bell was a throw in, he's a good 2-way player with a good shot, he proved it when he was in Chi-town, didn't fit in with SJ, big deal.

The Leafs aren't done, too many blue-liners and you know JFJ is going to move at least one to free up cap space, hopefully, it's McCabe!!!

From a Sharks fan. I believe the Sharks are the ones who lose out. Toskala is 30 years old but his minutes played are minimal for him. He has 3 to 5 years left and after watching him for 3 seasons, he can play. No injury problems, and has the ability to get hot, real hot. 26-10 and 1? In the Pacific division with West coast travel (which is brutal). Also Bell never recovered from his brush with the law prior to last seasons' start. He just was not the same player. What do the Sharks get? Cap room for Chris Drury.

Its a good deal. The team just got better today. Bell is a little expensive but he has great potential. Toskala will push Raycroft to be better. don't forget we still have Poggie. Not sure if the team has enough $$ to get a free agent

This is a bad trade heres why.The leafs could have brought curtis joseph in for cheap because he stated he would love coming back to toronto. As for bell just look at the free agents that are out there with the same qualities.Once again toronto gives up a future player but who cares right. No wonder why this team with fergie at the front lines are going nowhere.

That's an awful lot of young potential to give up for a 30 year old goalie who'll become a free agent next year. Ferguson et al need to seriously start to rebuild the whole team. Who is going to generate offense??
