Is this a good deal for the Leafs?
Fri, June 22, 2007

One year after trading with the Boston Bruins for Andrew Raycroft, Leafs' GM John Ferguson made another splash Friday, reeling in Vesa Toskala from the San Jose Sharks. Toskala, 30, has one year remaining on a contract that pays him only US$1.375 million.

Forward Mark Bell also comes in the deal for Toronto's 2007 or '08 first-round pick (that's San Jose's option), a 2007 second-round pick and a 2009 fourth-round selection. The Leafs went into Friday night's draft with the 13th overall selection.

best one yet for fergie! but don't get your hopes up too high - still not enough to make the playoffs!

I think it's a good trade for the Maple Leafs.

Toskala > Raycroft and Bell can rebound to hit 20 or 25 goals and be a gritty forward - he's only 26 years old.

Rumours have it that the Maple Leafs are trying to recoup a draft choice (maybe in the first round) in another trade.

Let's hope it gets done; maybe they can move Kubina and someone for a higher first round pick.

Good move JF.

It a "nothing special deal" teams were throwing around first rounders at the trade deadline for rent -a -players. Toskala is solid, not spectacular and Mark Bell is basically Chad Kilger with only slightly better hands. Oh well at least JFJ did something. This team really needs to be torn down and rebuilt from the botton up. Sundin should not have been resigned. They could have used that cap space to sign a capapble center and a servicable left winger.

Although the Leafs overpaid, this move had to be done.

It's not a good sign of things to come when your Number 1 goalie gets pulled in the last game of the season to make way for a mediocre back-up goaltender.

Leafs would have easily made the playoffs if they had a decent goaltender.

What bothered me most was that Raycroft didn't even feel ashamed of his (non) performance in the final stretch.

Leafs are a better team after this deal.

MOST Leafs fans have a problem. They will never be happy with The Toronto Maple Leafs. Even if Toronto got Crosby and Ovechkin at the same time, some Leafs fans would find something to pick on, maybe something like Ovechkin's yellow laces for example. Leafs fans have got to stop bashing every move that MLSE makes. They have have to learn to appreciate what they have, just like how the Winnipegs and Quebecs have most likely learned. The last time I checked, the Gardens/ACC have been sold out for years, so they must be doing SOMETHING right.

Giving up the 13th pick in a weak draft isn't a bad thing, especially since Raycroft didn't prove to be the second coming of Johnny that he was billed as last year. Bell is capable of 20 goals and we wouldn't have gotten that out of the 13th pick.

I'm so sick of the Leaf fans looking to bash anything and everything JFJ does. Give me a break! Look at Toskala's stats last season. After game #82 against Montreal it was evident we needed a better goalie, and JFJ has filled that need. Please negative Leaf fans find some better and more positive things to do with your time. Maybe you can get a job on the fan 590's round table!

This trade is great for Toronto. They finally get a real goalie. Toskala will be the starter in no time. Lets all boo raycroft out of the #1 spot
Keiser Soze, 2007-06-22 15:51:08

Anything that JFJ does is nothing but a horror story!

Give up Fergie, go visit your old man. The moment that Leafs management comprehends this and unloads you, that will be the first step in the right direction.

Didnt we just trade away the so called best goalie in Finland a year ago with the first round pick we had then? This has to be a joke or the leafs just dont like keeping anyone in the first round
