Is this a good deal for the Leafs?
Fri, June 22, 2007

One year after trading with the Boston Bruins for Andrew Raycroft, Leafs' GM John Ferguson made another splash Friday, reeling in Vesa Toskala from the San Jose Sharks. Toskala, 30, has one year remaining on a contract that pays him only US$1.375 million.

Forward Mark Bell also comes in the deal for Toronto's 2007 or '08 first-round pick (that's San Jose's option), a 2007 second-round pick and a 2009 fourth-round selection. The Leafs went into Friday night's draft with the 13th overall selection.

Why dont we just admit that we made a mistake with Raycroft. By the way-get rid Of Ferguson. By the way, we want new owners!!

This trade is good for the leafs on a number of levels.

We now have a number one goalie who is not a mediocre number one goalie like Raycroft. Toskala is a top ten goalie in this league.

As for Mark Bell, he did fine before he headed to San Jose. Seems like a lot players struggle in the San Jose organization. Adding Mark Bell is not a risk at all. This looks like a player who went through the sophmore jinx. Now all we need to do is make some space by getting rid of a big salaried player who has been under preforming. There are a few to choose from.

As a Montreal fan I say thank-you to JFJ for that deal. Its Christmas all over again. One has to wonder, who else is paying JFJ for destroying the leafs, not only today but for years to come. Why did he trade for a 30 year old goalie who played as a back-up when he needs a starter. And also they only have 6 draft picks, they traded them all on Mark Bell and Vesa Toskala. Is that a good deal? To me if I was a leaf fan i would switch teams.

As a San Jose fan who watched every game last season, I can say that the Leafs are fortunate because Toskala is an extremely talented and consistent #1 goalie. Until he injured his groin (again) towards the end of the season, he was playing much better than Nabakov. You will discover how underrated he really is. As for Bell--I wish you luck!

It would be nice if jfj plays well but even if he does it is still a bad deal. They are trading the future away.

JFJ is a loser. He's turning the leafs fans away because he's continually screwing us. If your gonna make a deal then make a deal and one which will have some impact on the leafs actually having a chance to run at the cup. Get rid of JFJ and get some canadian kids on this team and will have a shot.

My heart almost stopped when i heard JFJ traded away first round pick again! I truly believe goaltending was not a major weakness for Toronto last year. It was a combination of poor performances by the likes of overpaid Bryant McCabe, Kubina plus average showing of Leafs rookies that did them in last year. Leafs should have kept the picks and would have got that top Russian superstar or Esposito in the first round. They need more scoring and better defensive play.

good trade now trade raycroft his salary and sundins 1year deal frees up enough cap to get scott gomez its a no brainer go get him now
bruce, 2007-06-23 12:02:52

This is a such a stupid and desparate trade. We could have picked Angelo Esposito or Cherm... and we got a back up goalie and a winger
Alex, 2007-06-23 11:34:23

I'm not familiar with Bryan Colangelo's hockey knowledge, but I would have more faith in him running the Leafs right now that JFJ.
