Is this a good deal for the Leafs?
Fri, June 22, 2007

One year after trading with the Boston Bruins for Andrew Raycroft, Leafs' GM John Ferguson made another splash Friday, reeling in Vesa Toskala from the San Jose Sharks. Toskala, 30, has one year remaining on a contract that pays him only US$1.375 million.

Forward Mark Bell also comes in the deal for Toronto's 2007 or '08 first-round pick (that's San Jose's option), a 2007 second-round pick and a 2009 fourth-round selection. The Leafs went into Friday night's draft with the 13th overall selection.

Please leave Baby Ferguson alone. As long as he is the GM the rest of the hockey world will never have to worry about the weak pathetic leafs.

it constantly amazes me that the toronto maple leafs can be so mediocre year after year and not win a cup. the leafs are in the world capitol city of hockey.they have the best minor hockey program with thousands of players, and a vast talent pool of junior league players, coaches, and knowledgable hockey people available to them sitting in their backyard of ontario.no other nhl team has this advantage.with this access to the best of canadian hockey, the leafs should have the best scouting, coaches, managers, superstar players winning scoring titles and championships.yet for some reason they barely make the playoffs or not at all.it's been a disorganized mess of a franchise with no pupose or urgency to win since 1967.they have no team identity or style of play.it's always been a bland boring team with no end in sight to change.it never varies, the chop suey way they draft players who don't fit into any type team framework, system or concept of what they are trying to achieve.managers and coaches who come and go and never click or have chemistry together to build a solid, fast and exciting team.the leafs will forever be a mish-mosh of players, managers, owners, and coaches brought together with no defining purpose of who they are as a team.the leafs should have represented canadian hockey to the world as what hockey is all about and how hockey should be played.sadly, maple leaf hockey is about as exciting to watch as a girls field hockey team.

I saw in the newspaper this morning that the St.Louis Blues have released Dallas Drake. The Leafs should sign him and pair him with Mike Peca, that would be a really good checking line with Chad Kilger and penalty killing unit.

Drake is fast, plays physical and and is a good leader also it probably wont take alot to sign him as a free agent.

Yes, I think it was a good trade. Toskala is a good goalie who will push and compete with Raycroft. And if they can sort out Bell, he can be a solid player, too. The draft way over rated anyway, I don't think they lost out on anything. But how on earth could they turn Scotty away? If I would have to fire the whole managemnet to get him, I would! This was the Leafs great chance...

Yes its a good trade, Toskala is a number 1 goalie and Bell can be a solid winger that is big, hits and fights and can score 20 - 25 goals maybe 30 if he plays with Sundin. Hopefully being back home will get Bell's career back on track. This is a good start for improving the Leafs for next year but still need to a add a few more forwards with more trades as the Leafs wont have much money to spend under the cap this year to sign any free agents. I hope JFJ will do as he says and does complete more trades as this trade isnt enough for the Leafs to make the playoffs next year.

Good trade - They finally get a legit number 1 and a forward with scoring ability. In exchange for a couple of picks in a weak draft. Some are saying the Leafs could have gotten either Esposito, or Cherepanov. Well St Louis had that #13 slot and took Lars Eller. There are very good reasons Esposito and Cherepanov fell so far down in the draft. Lots of risks that either one of those kids will never play in the NHL. I'd rather have 2 proven NHL'ers, than an iffy first round and long range second round draft pick.
Bob, 2007-06-25 09:26:27

Leafs could have had Esposito at 13. now we have 2 backup goalies in place of trask and first round pick. wow!

We desperately need a team in Hamilton. Maybe empty seats at the ACC and a packed house in Hamilton will finally convince the powers that be to start running the Leafs like a team that wants to win a cup.
JT, 2007-06-23 16:30:41

It's not like Leaf fans to be so negative ... otherwise they would not still be Leaf fans. Bottom line is still the bottom line in T.O. and as long as the house is full it doesn't matter what product they throw on the ice. This is the REAL reason there has not been a contender in Toronto for so long.
