Is Muckler right for the Leafs?
Thu, July 5, 2007

John Muckler is next in line for an interview with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment as the mega-sports empire continues its search for a senior advisor to help out the hockey club's general manager, John Ferguson.

A source told The Canadian Press that the interview with MLSE was to be held as early as Friday. A call to Muckler was not immediately returned Thursday. Muckler, 73, was replaced as Ottawa Senators GM by head coach Bryan Murray after the season and declined a chance to stay on as a consultant.

Yes, he should be fired. He's old, he's ugly, and he's out of touch with the fans. He signed Gerber for 3+million when the guy had one good season. He refused to take the captaincy from Alfie after last year's collapse, and the lack of leadership cost us the Cup this year. Enough!!!
Jon Lemieux, 2007-06-18 09:09:08

Yes, he made some bad decisions during the last years, starting with giving a 3 year contract - $9+million to Martin Gerber who was benched the previous years series as a non-performing goaltender, to give a very generous contract to Defenceman, Wayne Redden who has made blunt mistakes and not performed well during the playoffs last year and this year and other similar decisons such as re-signing Peter Schaeffer to a multi-year contract.

It is time to get someone who will get players that have character and can win right to the end, the Stanley Cup.

i think john shouldn't be fired he is a great gm they need to keep him! he is the best gm I ever seen. if someone is getting fired its going to be the ducks gm or coach!

Go ahead Ottawa!!You already embarrased your city and Canada. So please do it again and then the LEAFS can bring in the right man at the right time.

No Muckler should not be fired. Its very rare for a team to win the Stanley Cup their first time playing in it. This was a learning experience that the Sens had to go through to learn what it takes to win it all. The Ducks were in the finals just a few years ago and lost to the Devils. Next year is the year to judge Muckler and Murray to see if the Sens lived up to expectations not this year. The Sens cruised through the east winning most series in 5 games, thats the downfall I think, having days off between series, add up all they days they had off leading up to the finals and it has to be into the 20's. Thats alot at playoff time. My hat is off to the entire Sens team and management on a great year!

Good luck next year.

Go Sens go!

He's done a good job as GM, but a change will be nice for the Senators as well.

Fired? For what logical reason?
serge gaspard, 2007-06-17 21:26:33

The Team should be fired. A GM and a Coach can only do so much and go so far. The Sens played like they didn't want to win. The only thing these millionaire hockey players know is money. They should be fined for poor performances.

His history of trade- deadline deals is pretty dismal, with the absolute worst being one trade he didn't make: that of Eaves and the first-round pick for Gary Roberts. Instead, he brings in Saprykin and then who sits for the first five games Saprykin plays? Why, Eaves, of course. And neither did anything of note in the Anaheim series, whereas someone with Roberts disposition would have at least met the Ducks physical play with some of his own. As for that first round draft pick, there isn't going to be much at the 29th pick anyway. He is simply too cautious and when he does pull the trigger it more often than not backfires. For example Gerber. Comrie was an OK trade - but he was a rental pure and simple and won't be back at his inflated salary. And while Murray may have historical shortcomings as a coach, there is no no denying his expertise as a GM. So, yes, Muckler should be booted - if not out the door completely, then to some "upstairs" consultative position.
George O'Leary, 2007-06-17 19:02:06

No, sure he's made some mistakes but what GM hasn't. He's also made many more good decisions than bad!
