Is Muckler right for the Leafs?
Thu, July 5, 2007

John Muckler is next in line for an interview with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment as the mega-sports empire continues its search for a senior advisor to help out the hockey club's general manager, John Ferguson.

A source told The Canadian Press that the interview with MLSE was to be held as early as Friday. A call to Muckler was not immediately returned Thursday. Muckler, 73, was replaced as Ottawa Senators GM by head coach Bryan Murray after the season and declined a chance to stay on as a consultant.

Leafs focus on Muckler

If the Leafs hire Muckler to oversee JFJ's moves they'll be like book-ends. Muckler left behind bloated contracts for Gerber and Corvo and, it seems, made an offer sheet to Saprykin even as he knew he was about to be sacked.

JFJ, of course, has saddled the Leafs with the untradable contracts of Kubina, McCabe, Tucker, Gill, Blake and, of course, Raycroft.

They deserve one another.

If I were an established GM, or NHL exec, why would I torment myself with going to this organization? The Teachers union spokesman Tannenbaum and Peddie are in a power struggle and the hockey operations are suffering for it.

The one thing that would save this franchise is selling to Jim Balsillie, or a single, majority owner. Let them hire who they think can do the best job and let the cards fall where they will.

Leaf ownership is back to the Ballard days!!!!!

Why don't the Leafs come into this century and hire someone who knows the new NHL and the style of game that is played in the league. Not that Muckler isn't a good hockey guy however he is 73 and I contend that his best days are behind him. JFJ has done nothing for the Leafs and possibly because he has to tow the MLSE line that upper management is laying in front of him. They don't seem to know anything at all. Maybe they should sign him to play on the wing with Sundin...maybe Norm Ullman is available. This circus has got to end. Get new blood and let them run the damn team. Bad decisions after bad decisions are the hallmark of the Leaf organization.

I hope they won't hire him. Muckler is an idiot and the Leafs have enough of them already. Even if they hire Pat Quinn back would be better. :-)

Muckler is an upgrade to what the Maple Laffs have right now. JFJ is getting bad at overpaying free agents the latest being Blake. The guy is 33 years old, was able to get a 5 year deal, and last season he had a career year scoring 40 goals and still didnt average a point a game I belive he finished with 69 points. Im shocked, he has 1 good year and gets a 5 year $ 20 million deal ? JFJ either has to grossly overpay free agents to come to Toronto or he has no idea how to negotiate contracts, maybe its a litle bit of both. Blake I bet wont score more than 30 goals this coming season. Why arent they going after Shanahan, he is the ideal free agent to bring in, a team player, leader and most importantly a winner! Doesnt hurt he is a Toronto boy. Just another mistake by the Make Me Laffs, no wonder they arent winners.

Andrew Ferguson has to get his facts straight. Muckler didnt get Nolan fired, Nolan did a pretty good job of that himself and of getting himsself blacklisted. Muckler has built 2 teams into getting to the Stanley Cup final. the 1999 Sabres were 90% his players (and Nolan wasnt coaching) and they went to the final and the 2007 Senators, largely players he acquired during his time! Thats more than can be said for anything the Leafs have done in the last 40 years!!! Im waiting for Bryan Murray to fall flat on his face in Ottawa.

If the Leafs are serious about a Stanley cup,Muckler should replace JFJ... It' being too long. One which I can remember, way bacck in 67. Get him out now.
brian murrin, 2007-07-05 22:19:23

What has Muckler ever done? My dog could have won with the Ottawa Team last year. Muckler is like Glen Sather, vastly over rated!
Ed Hankinson, 2007-07-05 19:48:21

It is the right move only if the Leafs are smart enough to hire this underated shred hockey genius into leaf land to keep the ship from sinking to the bottom.
