Was Pronger fairly punished?
Sat, June 2, 2007

This was not a playoff game Chris Pronger will want to remember.

The Anaheim Ducks stalwart defenceman kicked a puck into his own net and failed to block a centering pass that led to another goal. And then there was the play in which Pronger raised the ire of the Senators, when he hit Dean McAmmond in the head and knocked the Ottawa forward woozy.

Was Pronger fairly punished for his hit on Dean McAmmond?

He should be....but won't be

Pronger should be suspended. If the NHL really wants to stop head shots, Here's another opportunity to show it. It does not matter if a player is 5'9" or 6'6", there is no excuse.

He's already been suspended once these playoffs, and now he does that. It was late, intentional and injured a player. Shades of Domi/Niedermeyer in '01 and the NHL should hand out the same punishment: suspend his crybaby primadonna self for the rest of the finals. Pronger is a loser and I laughed for hours after watching him score his best goal ever earlier tonight. Could have sworn he was a Duck...lol. NHL won't do it though. Domi was merely a goon but Pronger is 'elite', so Gary Bettman will reprimand and then resume kissing his rear. Sad.

Was it a forearm/elbow shot to the head? Yes

Was it a late shot? Yes

Was it deliberate? Yes

Was someone injured? Yes

Was the culprit a repeat offender? Yes

Does the NHL have the guts to do something about it? Probably not.

Prediction: Colin Campbell will just do his typical phone call slap on the wrist and simply look the other way on another cheap shot.

Purposely positioning an elbow to hit a guy in the head is clearly intent to injure. If the NHL isn't the rollerball on ice, he should get at least 2 games. Ideally, he should be out at least as long as McAmmond.

Well he should be but he won't be. It's the NHL and inconsistency is the name of the game. That was clearly a deliberate elbow to the head - some nights its a penalty, other nights its not. When it is called sometimes its 2 minutes and other nights its 5. Now depending on the phase of the Moon and how it aligns with Mercury its a suspension for anything between 1 and 15 games. On rare occasions it's a criminal offense.

One has to factor in that Pronger is a star player, Pronger is a repeat offender and its the Stanley Cup finals - that being said, its never clear how this actually factors in. Another apparently important factor is whether McAmmond will play the next game or not - why this is important is beyond my comprehension. McAmmond will probably play the next game so that's why I think Pronger will too.

Pronger won't be suspended. The hit wasn't vicious enough. However, he should have been penalized. D. McAmmond is a great addition to the Sens and was having another great night before the hit. MAN..that guy is fast for an old guy.

The Pronger shot to McAmmond was deliberate and there was an intent to injure. Given his history, the NHL, if it wants to be taken seriously, has to suspend him again. Some guys never learn!

Cheap shot elbow. The lack of discipline will be their undoing. Definately should be out for the season.

Let them play hockey ...... it's a man's game. The fix was in for this game anyway ...... just look at the penalty calls which were a joke. The NHL should be embarrassed by the ref's in this game.
