Was Pronger fairly punished?
Sat, June 2, 2007

This was not a playoff game Chris Pronger will want to remember.

The Anaheim Ducks stalwart defenceman kicked a puck into his own net and failed to block a centering pass that led to another goal. And then there was the play in which Pronger raised the ire of the Senators, when he hit Dean McAmmond in the head and knocked the Ottawa forward woozy.

Was Pronger fairly punished for his hit on Dean McAmmond?

Clean hit, no suspension.

If Sens fans want to moan they seem to have a short memory (no pun intended) to the Neil hit on Drury when he decided to venture off his wing into the slot to hit Drury with a shot to the head.

He should absolutely be suspended. If Chris Neil went out and did the same thing to Scott Neidermeyer or Crosby it would not even be a question and it would have been a 5 minute penalty. Because Pronger did it to a 4th line forward it's okay? He has a history of it (a recent history). This theory that it would show that the NHL favors the Sens is asinine. If anything it is the opposite given the lay-off imposed by the NHL so all the Ducks could get healthy. Kunitz would not have been back if the series started on time.

So tell me CrazyPierre, why did they suspend him for 1 game in the last round for an equally-vicious head hit? Part of the game my Royal Canadian Butt. That might be the thinking of that dinosaur in loud suits on the so-called Coach's Corner, but if the NHL doesn't suspend him for at least 2 they come out just reinforcing the growing impression that this is a bush league..

They suspended him 1 game for a forearm to the head of Holmstrom, so I don't see how they cannot suspend him for at least one game now.

Pronger should be suspended. It was intentional and the league claims to cracking down on blows to the head. Given his previous suspension, I'd say he should be gone for the rest of the series, but we'll see what the suits decide.

Come on people McAmmond is 5ft tall and Pronger is 7ft tall any hit would be an elbow yes a penalty but not a suspension. Is Neil scared of Pronger? He did not go near him after that. Yes he did yell at Neidermyer but why? he won't fight...Neil has had his chance to fight May ... I know Neil will wait for him to be at the end of his shift just like the coward he is...

A clear suspension, and as a repeat offender he should be out for the rest of the series. This was not just a random elbow, he attacked the player who forced him to put the puck in his own net.

Will the NHL do anything? I doubt it. For a game full of tough guys, hockey is run by cowards.
Neil, 2007-06-03 12:20:22

There is no doubt that Pronger should be suspended. Two weeks later, he has carried out another deliberate headshot with intent to injure another player. With the nature of the strike, it is irrelevant whether it was an elbow or a forearm. There was clear air as he stuck his arm out. He is sneaky dirty, and a liar "I was just finishing my check". One game usually, but with repeat status, he should be gone for the playoffs. Anything less is bush league.

Ok. First of all I dont know how anyone can deny that Pronger DELIVERED that elbow express to McAmmonds face. It was quite obvious. Secondly, after reading this post, try to find the Bret Hull commentary from last game through Google.

Will Pronger be suspended. I think he should be; his prior hit on Holmstrom was perhaps a little more forceful, but it was in line with a bodycheck delivered by a large man on a smaller man. Against McAmmond, Pronger was SKATING BACKWARDS and shot out the elbow; much more deliberate. Given his prior(s) this should be at minimum a 2 game suspension.

But WILL he be? Probably not. The league is weak; it is losing TV viewership to telethons and horse racing. Like him or not, Pronger is a star; stars get different treatment.

Expect 1 game or nothing at all.

No suspension.

If Pronger gets suspended for one game even, it will make the NHL look like it is favouring the Sens are definitely let them win game 4.

You have to roll with the hits in this game.
