Was Alfredsson's goal legal?
Sat, June 2, 2007

General Manager John Muckler said the Senators need a hero to step up and it doesn't necessarily have to be captain Daniel Alfredsson, centre Jason Spezza or winger Dany Heatley, who have been the lightning rods for the criticism.

"Somebody has to take control," said Muckler. "You have to have good leadership and I feel we have good leadership, but somebody has to take control of the team and lead the team on the ice.

Was Alfredsson's goal legal? Did the refs make the right call? Have your say in our forum.

the kicking motion was after the puck glanced off his foot. To all you leafs fans who are in misery with Ottawa's success: watch the series so you know what it must have felt like 40 years ago! if you can't bear to watch it then i think the NHL network is showing reruns of the '67 cup. Go Sens Go!

They said the final decision by the league was based "not" on slow motion highlights but on regular speed....at regular speed, that puck was without a doubt kicked in!

It was certainly a goal. This 'follow through' that has people concerned was nothing more than a man maintaining his balance. Try putting supporting foot sideways, being pushed from the back and you will see yourself arch backwards and the front leg come up. He didn't "kick"...this looks altogether different...

There's only one way that wasn't a goal; if you rewrite the rule book. Because according to the rule book, the puck can be redirected by a skate. The puck wasn't kicked, so any late kicking motion may as well have been a day late. It has no bearing on the legitimacy of the goal.

I'm a Sens fan and was sure after seeing it initially it wasn't going to be a goal. Same as I was sure Thomas Vanek's off the glove goal in the last series against Buffalo would count. I find you have no idea what the booth is going to come up with of late. I have to wonder whether the fact he was being railroaded towards the net at the time factored in. This question is rather skewed don't you think? It doesn't matter if it was legal. In the eyes of those making the decisions it was called a goal. It's a moot point beyond that.

Sure it was legal. They counted Prongers kick-in goal. Of course, that was into his own net. hehehe

Some of those "so called" experts that watched the game could see it was a legal goal. Funny how we all watch the same game and see it so different.

If the game wasn't played in Canada (yes I'm Canadian but I look at this sport with the reality it is) it would have been no goal. The Pronger hit may have been dirty, but so were most of Neil's hits (especially the cross check that almot took off a guys head) and there was no call.

Alfredson did not make a distinct kicking motion according to the rule book, so it is a goal. You can complain and cry me a river over that goal, but Alfredson's goal did not win the game, the Sens' new found skating and gusty hitting did.

I'm sure Alfie knew that the slapshot was going to re-direct to that exact spot even with the Anaheim players beween him and the puck. I'm sure he would have been right in front of the net to kick it in if he sensed there would be no deflection.
