Was Alfredsson's goal legal?
Sat, June 2, 2007

General Manager John Muckler said the Senators need a hero to step up and it doesn't necessarily have to be captain Daniel Alfredsson, centre Jason Spezza or winger Dany Heatley, who have been the lightning rods for the criticism.

"Somebody has to take control," said Muckler. "You have to have good leadership and I feel we have good leadership, but somebody has to take control of the team and lead the team on the ice.

Was Alfredsson's goal legal? Did the refs make the right call? Have your say in our forum.

It should have been disallowed.

The rules allow for a puck that has been deflected off a player (including the skate) but not for a puck that has been deliberately directed as was done by Alfredsson.

Rule 57 clearly states this as folklows "if an attacking player has the puck deflect into the net, off his skate or body, in any manner, the goal shall be allowed. The player who deflected the puck shall be credited with the goal.

The goal shall not be allowed if the puck has been intentionally kicked with his skate or foot, using a distinct kicking motion, and subsequently enters the net.

A goal shall be allowed unless a distinct kicking motion is evident.

The goal shall not be allowed if the puck has been thrown or otherwise deliberately directed into the goal by any means other than a stick."

As I see it, Alfredssons goal was not a deflection but a deliberate redirection of the puck. NO GOAL!!

SHOULD HAVE BEEN NO GOAL. ANYTIME A PLAYER KICKS NO MATTER BEFORE, AFTER, OR DURING THE CALL SHOULD BE NO GOAL. I CAN'T BELIEVE THE AMOUNT OF BAD CALLS EVEN WITH VIDEO REPLAY.

Anybody who was convinced that there was a kicking motion after is badly mistaken. Alfredsson was being pushed into the net, hence the forward motion of his entire body. All he did was deflect it. You know why this is a fair assessment, because I personally can't stand Alfredsson. Go Flames!!!!

The goal was GOOD!!! There was no kicking motion and Alfie was being pushed into the net. After the puck was redirected towards the net Alfie was trying to stop and not kick the puck.

two words - no goal.

Sorry Greg Millan, even Keenan would have pulled you after that one.

Of course it was a legal goal. Since when is merely placing your legs together so you dont fall over illegal in hockey? Suck it up duck fans ... your in for a roast .. oh, and about your orange colour at home..I like my duck orange ... very tasty!

The goal was legal. Comparing it to other good or blown calls in the past is completely moot. This particular goal was legal, which is why the allowed it. All the p***** off Leafs fans and Sens haters can whine all they want... I guess Sens bashing will have to do since your team can't even make the playoffs.

The goal would not have counted if the game was not being played in Canada? Give me a break. The NHL could care less about Canada, there are are the 10 times more people in the US than Canada. The officials are the same BTW regardless of the game being played in the US or Canada. The real cause of the goal is the fact that the Ducks are always making the cheap play of pushing people into the goal or holding them up and then crying foul. Another Brian Burke team.

Perfectly good goal. Any un-biased person would agree.

Here we go. An Ottawa Senator goon showed up and try to attack the leaf fans. How sad...

Just wait until next week. I am sure you will go back and hide until next season.
