Was Alfredsson's goal legal?
Sat, June 2, 2007

General Manager John Muckler said the Senators need a hero to step up and it doesn't necessarily have to be captain Daniel Alfredsson, centre Jason Spezza or winger Dany Heatley, who have been the lightning rods for the criticism.

"Somebody has to take control," said Muckler. "You have to have good leadership and I feel we have good leadership, but somebody has to take control of the team and lead the team on the ice.

Was Alfredsson's goal legal? Did the refs make the right call? Have your say in our forum.

i say no goal. yes the kicking motion comes just after the puck hit his foot, but the play happens so fast. his intent was there, it may have been a normal reaction, and his reaction time may have been slow, but the intention was there. no goal!

Bob's point, it's no longer rule 57 it is now "Rule 78.5

i) When the puck has been directed, batted or thrown into the net by an attacking player other than with a stick.

Joe Plazek, if a player makes a kicking motion 10 seconds later, is it no goal? The movement of the foot happened after the puck hit the skate, not before or during. So, it's a goal. Silly soccer references indicate you didn't look at the replay. I'm confused, though, as to who "The NHL Wants to Win" .. seems half say Ottawa's being favoured and half say the American team is being favoured. I think anybody saying that, either way, should be ignored.

Thank-you Bob Edwards. He clearly moved his skate in a backwards motion to deliberately direct the puck into the net. However, all these tools on TV and in the NHL offices want to see ottawa win, so they stop reading the rule after kicking motion. Just like everytime Anaheim got control of the game there would be a penalty called, to give ottawa a chance. if they want them to have the cup that bad, why don' they just give it to them, so that we can have hockey back. For the last 5 years they have been changing the face of hockey to give ottawa a chance, just give them the cup already, they aren't good enough to win it on their own. Let's go already. Besides no one in Canada, outside of ottawa care if the win or not. Look at the cbc's numbers. NO ONE CARES!!! they might as well be in Nashville.

Irrefutible evidence is required to overturn a decision. Was it irrefutible?

I personaly think they need to revisit this entire rule, with the size of equipment on the goalies and the fact they want more scoring I feel that any puck entering the net other than a High stick or hand pass should be a goal.

This was a goal. There was no kicking motion. The motion afterwards was simply to regain balance after the ducks player was pushing him! Any hockey player would agree!

Prongers hit would have been clean if McAmmond had been standing up straight! But he wasn't. Good call regardless of severity of the injury McAmmond received!!
