Did the long layoff hurt the Sens?
Mon, May 28, 2007

As Senator fans shake their heads at the outcome of the Stanley Cup series opener, the inevitable question Ottawa players will have to answer is: did the long layoff hurt their game?

Sens layoff hurt their game

When NHL teams make the Stanley Cup Playoff run they ALL have earned the right to have a fair schedule established. No one team should hold-out and have a game scheduled later and extend layoffs between series due to other commitments they will not cancel at their arena, and mark my words, they have the right and the ability to cancel any event in their arena at any time. Standard contracts always make way/room for this, from either party. So, why the long layoffs bewteen series? The NHL executives have not put in place a rule or any enforcements to assure layoffs do not get extended. It is so "bush league" when an owner can't cancel something like, say, a Stars on Ice show scheduled on a Saturday and whines that they can't play until the following Sunday or Monday! Wrong. The league should enforce a rule where, when both teams are finished a round and ready to start the next, a maximum of four days is allowed to elapse. That means that the home team has to clear it's arena by no more than the fourth day after the preceding series completes. If the home team cannot, or refuses to, or will not then that team looses home ice advantage and the other team is asked if their arena is ready/available. If it is then the series starts at that arena. By loosing home ice advantage the incentive will be there for the home team to make sure their arena is available, and, it will make sure there are not long delays between series. At the end of a series a four day rest is enough! Let's get some "balls" there NHL executives, and implement a scheuling system and set of rules that will keep things rolling during the race for the Stanley Cup!!! Where's there's a will there's a way .... of course NHL execs, you have to want to make this happen!!!!

It hurt them as much as it hurt the Ducks, who had basically the same amount of time off.

Time off is a weak excuse.

Sens were fine until the third. I think the time off hurt them, but they'll be better in game 2. Whoever said the Ducks were "toying" with them was obviously off getting a drink during the second period, because it looked quite the opposite to me.

When the Sens won the semi-final I was telling everyone it should have lasted one more game the Sens would have not lost their momentum. I predicted they would be rusty in the first game of the series. Of course after 9 days, they had no injured players or banged too much so they lost the momentum it's only human. As for the Ducks it must have been great, they had time to get back in full shape. So, the NHL is not favouring a USA win? It sure look like they are. They should stop sucking up to the American television station it will give them nothing anyways, it will not get more of those viewers to watch our game anyways but it might destroy the interest on this side of the boarder.

The lay off certainly didn't help any. The Ducks definitley were more physical. Ottawa needs get the puck deep and do some crashing and banging if they hope to have any chance to make this a series. Hopefully game one was a wake up call. As mentioned below by Steve, someone please let Redden know this is the finals. His subpar performance resulted in being -3 in game one. He clearly needs to step up and be more physical. Go Sens!!!!!!!!!

I don't know, Sens. Ducks looked like they were toying with you. Sure you were leading going into the third (couldn't shut them down, though).

Hope you guys aren't thinking of leaving anything in the tank for the home fans when the series switches to Kanata. It may be too late by then and all the work to get to this point will have been in vain.

Go out there in the next game and get your noses dirty. I see playoff beards but not enough black eyes.

Get that puck into the offensive zone and battle. In the defensive zone, stop allowing the bigger Ducks to dangle and walk along the boards. Slam a few of them, and stronger stickwork to get the puck.

Finally you guys have a challenge. Let's see if you can meet it. Don't let the Ducks do to you what you did to Buffalo.

Time for some of the fancy players with shirts tucked inside their pants to untuck them. Time for fancy play is over. Time for war is here and now.

Yes the Sens were rusty and probably played one of their worst games of the playoffs so far, but only lost by one goal with three minutes left in the game. Wait until Wednesday you will see a different team. I also would like to know what is the reason for the long layoff? Also, would somebody please tell Redden that we are in the Stanley Cup playoffs!

I believe there was a little rust in the play of the Senators last night. I would like to know the real reason for the delay of start of series. It's only 1 game.

Anaheim had 6 days off as well. This issue is beyond Ottawa's layoff, but the NHL waiting so long to get the finals started. There was some great momentum but that was lost. Like everyone I know we just don't care any longer...IT'S GOING TO BE MID JUNE WHEN THIS IS DONE
Ken Weiss, 2007-05-29 07:51:37

Most definitely. It also hurt the NHL, as a lot of people outside of Ottawa and Anaheim just stop watching. The momentum was lost. Bad move by the NHL all round.
