Who's really 'Canada's team'?
Thu, May 24, 2007

OTTAWA (CP) - With Ottawa as the lone Canadian team in the Stanley Cup finals, it seems more and more people see the Senators as "Canada's team."

A new poll suggests most Canadians still see the Toronto Maple Leafs as the hockey team that most represents the country. Among the nearly one-quarter of Canadians who, when asked, said they are avid hockey fans, 27 per cent picked the Leafs as Canada's team in a Decima poll conducted last weekend.

I was reading all the sour Leafs fans bashing the SENS and saying Ducks has more Canadian players so we should cheer for the Ducks. I found that theory interesting and did a little digging and found Leafs also had 16 Cdns which is the same number as the Ducks. Using the same logic, next time if Ducks vs the Leafs, we can cheer for either of them as they both being considered as Cdn team with 16 cdn players. For those of you interested, I found Senators, Flames and Oilers all have 13 Cdn players and Nashville has 14(I guess we should count Nasville as Cdn team too. LOL). The figures are coming from wikipedia and subject to change but I think the numbers are pretty close. Go SENS go!!! Bring the Stanley cup home!

The senators are definitely not canadas team they have next to no history and they are a dirty team, the leafs are canadas team because of their long history, sens suck.

Geoff,

Learn grammar...then cheer for a team. By the way, the team almost predates the Leafs. A name without soul is nothing, good luck in the next 40 years.

Leafs fans are truly a hard bunch to figure out. Not only do they blindly follow a team that will NEVER win anything, they refuse to enjoy what the Senators are poised to do, which is bring the Cup back to Canada. Now that, my friends, is un-Canadian! I guess they really must enjoy disappointment. Oh well, they can watch their blood pressure rising as the rest of Canada watches the parade in Ottawa!

GO SENS!!!

Canada's team?

How about the Ducks with 17 Canadians taking regular shifts on a nightly basis, opposed to the Senators with 11 players plying their trade. Just because the Senators are Stanley Cup bound, I'm not jumping on the bandwagon. I'm a Leaf fan and I am not about to give up meat to become a vegeterian. Cheers

Utter nonsense by other pollsters who suggest teams laced with Scandinavian, western or eastern European, or Slavic backgrounds could even be considered as "Canada's team"!

Obviously the team with highest ratio of Canadians on playing roster is the real deal. Right now that distinction belongs to the Flames at high end 19 players, while Canadiens are low end at 13, and the rest nestled between 15-17 Canadians rostered. Adding to this, Flames have accumulated 12 western Canadians onto its roster. How could another view it any better than that?

Lovely to see so many Sen's haters out there! Pretty pathetic actually, not being able to cheer for the last Canadian Team remaining. Not surprised though, being that Toronoto is the last remaining Canadian Team NOT to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals..since EXPANSION...of course the LEAFS won the poll...what else do their fans do all day other than live in a fantasy world..keep up the futility Toronto.

I've been a Sens' fan since before they played their first game back in '92. If the rest of Canada wants to get on board now, there's room for everyone! If not, it's their loss. This is the best chance since 1993 for Stanley to come home where he belongs, I hope all Canadian fans enjoy the ride!

the sens are so canada's team. so what is they have not history they are in the finals and they made the playoffs unlike the maple loozers. the habs r an ok team and samae with the oilers but we all know who is going to take the cup and thats THE OTTAWA SENATORS SO GO SENS GO. TAKE THE CUP AND SHOW ALL THERE LEAF FAN HOW ITS DONE
DAN LAFLAIR, 2007-05-24 22:32:55

Yawn.... is there anyone who doesn't think that these have been the most boring playoffs in recent memory? Who cares who wins?

There are a lot of bitter Leafs fans out there that want Ottawa to lose just for spite. I haven't been a Leafs fan since Ballard mistreated a great player and captain like Dave Keon. I always believed that you support your home team no matter what. That is why I became a Sens fan when I moved to Ottawa years ago. Daniel Alfredsson reminds me a lot of Keon showing his leadership by example and his tremendous play on the ice. The Sens are playing great hockey and all hockey fans should enjoy it! Bring the cup back to Canada!
