Should the Preds stay in Nashville?
Tue, August 14, 2007

A local group trying to keep the Predators in Nashville is on the verge of signing a letter of intent.

Owner Craig Leipold has been working with a group of local investors to finalize a bid for the team since flying to New York on July 18 for a meeting with NHL officials.

Leipold has been trying to sell his franchise because he said he has lost $70 million since being awarded the team in June 1997.

This might mean that the team is not moving anywhere for now. Is this good news for the NHL?

Preds staying, for now

I will not watch anymore NHL hockey until the NHL fires Bettman and reverses it's greed induced obsession with ramming OUR GAME down the throats of those who could care less.

This is just stupid, put a team in Hamilton, even cut down on the amount of teams, shorten the season, these players are to beat up after such a long playoff and the excitement is lost, their is such a thing as to much hockey even for a Canadian...

Never mind that 4th on the US list in a country of 400 million people actually has more viewers than a country of 32 million people that rank it first.

Never mind that to expand you need new viewers and the US also has more of them.

Never mind that Bettman does the bidding of the owners and Toronto and Buffalo say don't put it in hamilton.

No its all Bettman and all you rich billionaires know better than the current rich owners.

Well, well;Bettman sure is winning. He has us(Canadians)fighting with each other. We need not argue,put-down and verbally abuse each other. In one sense or another we are all right. We all know that there are two major fact's about the N.H.L. vs. Canada.(1)never mind that hockey is not even forth on the list of America's favourite sport's.Hell, they'd rather watch Poker.(2)Even the N.B.A. wanted nothing to do with Bettman, proving that he is an ass when it comes to marketing and public perception.E.I., When your President is bored and not interested in the league's award show how can he really be interested in the health of the game.Yet,cheer right up my fellow Canucks.Bettman will be gone in a year or 2 at the most.Once the Champions league really hit's it's stride in Europe and Russia, many of the great European player's will go home. They hate it in the states and will have a viable alternative to go home or close to it.Thus, watering done the league even more. Most of them,if they stay, enjoy playing in hockey hot-beds,which means Canada.Add,that our dollars rise is now crippiling the American teams, the end result would be for the N.H.L,to kiss our butt's to even try to maintain any interest in the states.Even our boy's want to comeback now with the dollars almost even and ours predicted to rise above the "greenback".We need no longer worry about American T.V. deals,American new and relocated team's,for there will not be enough player's left to fill their countless "hockey hotbeds".More teams in Canada will be needed and this sad product, which we now call hockey shall, once and for all die.Our CUP,shall be returned for us to decide who and when it is played for.Our new league will compete with the euro league, especially in a championship tournament.Hockey will once again thrive and tell and be proud of it's rich and true history.Euro Cup,named the VICTORIA CUP,AFTER REAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST KNOWN INDOOR GAME PLAYED IN MONTREAL.What is left of American hockey will be swallowed up by Canada,Russia, and the rest of Europe. And,best of all,NO BETTMAN or any other stupid yank running" OUR" "game. And one last thing,no more bull s__t about the oringal six. There never was such a time in N.h.l. history. There where five and just think of the name "National"they where all Canadian.

Bettman is an idiot!!!!! He is prejudiced against Hamilton and Canada.

Bettman if Canada is that bad then stop using our players to make up your American teams !!!!!!! Lets see how many teams you would have without Canadian players and how long the NHL would survive without them and what the value would be then, maybe a few million if your lucky.

Bettman must be fired before he completely ruins hockey in Canada just as he is doing in the USA.

Bettman get a clue already, Americans dont care about hockey and never will, so your dream of landing a big time tv contract is wishful thinking. Hey Gary dont forget this bit of info ok, you work for the owners not the other way around so get it through your thick head that you are not running the league cuz you arent you are just a lil muppet !!!!

Bettman must go and the sooner the better.

As long as Bettman is there, no teams will come to Canada. Why he is still in there is beyond me.Every time i see him he looks like a little sneak. Someone please run against him and get him out of there. He is not good for hockey. As long as he is getting paid he don't give a rats you no what.

Dan are cities like Kansas a better fit than Hamilton ? I wasnt aware Kansas is a big US market like New York or Los Angles. I am sure adding Kansas will get the big TV deal they have been trying to get for the last 20 years and adding it will put them over the top. Kansas will fail yet again and move after a few years to another " hotbed " like Houston LOL. Americans for the most part would rather watch tractor pulls than a hockey game. Hockey didnt even make the top ten sports in the USA never mind being fourth after MLB,NFL and the NBA.

Bettman is an idiot, he knows nothing about hockey, he came from the NBA as he was working under David Stern. He is too stubborn to say he made a mistake in places like Carolina, Florida, Phoenix and Atlanta. He will wait for them teams to go bankrupt before he would let them relocate, now thats bad business. There are some good hockey cities in the US but most couldnt care less about the game. The TV deal is a pipe dream that will never happen on a scale like the NFL, NBA or MLB.

Hockey Is Canada, Canada is hockey!!!

I can't believe how naive some people are! Don't blame just the American owners for not wanting a team in Hamilton...blame the Canadian owners as well. The NHL is a business and all businesses have one main goal...grow the business to increase franchise values. As of now, the NHL is a tier-2 league, meaning that it will never hit the "mother-load" until it is accepted as a major sport by folks in the US. For this to happen it will have to generate interest in all areas of the US and most importantly, score a major US TV deal. By moving teams back to Canada, the NHL would essentially admit that it can never compete with the big boys (baseball, football, basketball) and it will be relegated to second class status for ever. If this happens, franchise values will decline and a lot of people will lose a lot of money (on both sides of the border). I have no doubt that Hamilton would fill its stadium for most games but the Canadian TV market is essentially fully tapped...and that's where the money is. So get over it guys...its just business!

Bettman doesn't understand hockey, he's just a shyster. The NHL's status has tanked under his leadership. I can't understand why the league doesn't dump him. Then maybe they'll see this wisdom in moving franchises from southern US cities to Hamilton & Winnipeg.

"Is the NHL trying to avoid having another Canadian team"

Well, let's see here: Balsillie offers 48 million more dollars than DelBaggio and now we're getting ready for the Kansas City Predators.

It would seem fairly clear that someone definitely does not want another team in Canada. The eternal chase for the "golden" USA televsion contract is never going to end. And yet still, motivated by greed and fuelled by ignorance, the league is still(still!) trying to push a square peg into a round hole when it comes to "selling" the game of hockey in the USA. The blatant ignorance being displayed over this matter is absolutely staggering. To see the league flaunt this kind of ignorance to it's fans is devastating.
