Is there a lack of respect in the NHL?
Wed, May 16, 2007

Detroit coach Mike Babcock raised the issue of players respecting each other Tuesday night when Red Wing forward Tomas Holmstrom needed 13 stitches to close a gash on his forehead. Holmstrom was slammed into the boards on a tag-team hit from the Ducks' Rob Niedermayer and Chris Pronger.

"I don't care how much is on the line at any time, you have to look after the other player," Babcock said at the time. "When he doesn't see you and you decide you're going to bury his head off the turn buckle, that's a decision you make."

Where's the respect?

100% YES. That was cheap and malicious. Pronger is a big man. You can see in the replay that he looked up and went for the head. Cheap shot. Should be out for a minimum of 3.

He should be out for the rest of the season, and i think every player should get three strikes. The third one your out of the NHL. By not doing anything they are giving our kids the okay to do it.

Thank you NHL

I'd say absolutely to a suspension for Pronger. I'm not a redwing fan AT ALL, but actions like this belittle the game, disgrace the team and inadvertly affect your own players. And I hope the ducks let pronger know just as appreciative they are of his selfish actions when they eventually get eliminated in the next few games.

I love HOCKEY. I do not take for a particular team. I just love good plays, hits, goals and saves. But for pronger (small p for P....) throw the book at him for being a complete A..HOLE. Gordie
Gordon Wadleigh, 2007-05-16 13:10:42

From what I saw watching the hit over and over, it looks like Pronger was trying to get the but of his stick at the base of Holmstrom's skull, which would have broken his neck. I say don't suspend him, kick him out of hockey permanently
Randy Burbach, 2007-05-16 13:08:47

The hit was dirty. Pronger deserves a suspension, but Holmstrom plays on the edge and I would say often gets what is coming to him. He should have been thrown out of quite a few games I've seen. I'd classify him as "sneaky cheap" when it comes to his work in front of the net. He will wear his stitches like a badge of honor. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking Holmstrom is the loser on that exchange.

The escapade of Pronger leaving the Oiler's to Anaheim left "Bad blood" all around. Not to mention a good picture of what this guy's character really consists of. I suppose we shouldn't be too surprised by his lack of judgment in this horrible Holstrom account. When is this Chris going to get his own "hit-from-behind"? (Or perhaps he gets that at home, so he feels entitled to be a bully when he's out on the ice?) Whatever his personal reasons, playing dirty is NOT professional, no matter how much money you have. Why can't this guy take the game seriously? Hockey need not be spoiled by players like Pronger. Maybe the NHL needs to enlist some therapists to help cope with the "big head" syndrome. Once again, I am BEYOND disappointed!

If ever there was a reason for a suspension in these playoffs, it happened last night. Pronger's elbow came up and buried Holmstrom's head into the glass from behind. I'd say that was "intent to injure". And it worked.
Ward Moroz, 2007-05-16 12:49:02

When you place this act into context with another playoff professional sport, which at the same time suspended one of its basketball stars for two(2) games for a 'flagrant foul' of far less consequence, then you realize why the NHL must step up and make an example. Head shots which have no place in sport, let alone the sanctuary that hockey has been allowed to be for far, far too long! Wake up NHL! This is precisely the stuff that minor hockey has been trying to eliminate and it's time to put it to the test when everything is on the line. The NBA has not been as knee-jerk about safety.
Mel Auten, 2007-05-16 12:34:40

Not only was the intent to injure, but instead of faking concern Pronger skates of smiling
