Is there a lack of respect in the NHL?
Wed, May 16, 2007

Detroit coach Mike Babcock raised the issue of players respecting each other Tuesday night when Red Wing forward Tomas Holmstrom needed 13 stitches to close a gash on his forehead. Holmstrom was slammed into the boards on a tag-team hit from the Ducks' Rob Niedermayer and Chris Pronger.

"I don't care how much is on the line at any time, you have to look after the other player," Babcock said at the time. "When he doesn't see you and you decide you're going to bury his head off the turn buckle, that's a decision you make."

Where's the respect?

Reminiscent of the Betuzzi hit in that it was a forearm/elbow to the back of the head/neck, done with speed, slamming the face into a hard object, this time the glass instead of the ice. Pronger has been a dirty player his whole career, does no one remember what he was like in front of the net before the rule changes? I say throw the book at him, 10 games or the rest of the playoffs, with a stiff fine. This cheap shot is the beginning of the end for the Ducks' Stanley Cup hopes.

does anyone forget the punch to the head of Giguere in game 1?? come on now.... the hit may have been not nice from Pronger but i think Holmstrom set the standard well before Pronger decided to take him out.......

Unbelievable...if the NHL does not do something about that, they are then condoning this type of behaviour. I have never been a big fan of Chris Pronger's, but now he is just the scum of the earth as far as I am concerned...throw the book at him, that could be called assault!!!! NHL do something to penalize this type of activity...no player should have to have their head split open because some goon doesn't know how to contain his temper.

what is up with that elihodge person..with comments like that he or she hasnt played a lot of contact sports and respect within these sports.. he or she is probably a couch sitter watching it on tv..i agree with storm you have a few screws loose with comments like that.. maybe you should come into my league and i will do the same to you and we will see if your thoughts are the same..wake up

Not only should but must be suspended if the league wants to keep whatever little credibility it has left. Chris Pronger is one of those players that gets away with a lot on the ice because probably of his star status. There must be no favoritism. It really was an intent to injure and he should be gone for several games.
Mike Pelletier, 2007-05-16 14:10:11

Professional Sports does not give any player the right to intentionally injure another player. Believe it or not professional athletes have the right to protection from goon tactics. If you believe in this type of behaviour in any sport you should go and have your head checked out. You're probably missing a few screws. It's hockey not the UFC.

Yes Pronger should be suspended but how should I know since the stupid Versus is the only place to watch the game. Thanks NHL for ruining for alot of people.

Tracie,

Not sure I follow your comment about judgement. Pronger not wanting to live in Edmonton or his wanting to keep his wife happy both seem to be good judgment to me. The hit, however, had nothing to do with either of these. He should be suspended for a game or two.

Even though he is a great player he still has no right to be a punk on the ice....Bring him to our league and we will straighten him out.....

Reading these comments about Pronger I would have to say they must come from alot of Leaf fans, don't really know much about hockey, or can't relate to the way the game should be played. In a fast paced game that includes body contact there will be injuries. For all of you whiny little cry babies, play your Sunday afternoon pleasure skate hockey and don't watch when men lay it all on the line for the sake of winning. That is called Professional Sports.
