Is there a lack of respect in the NHL?
Wed, May 16, 2007

Detroit coach Mike Babcock raised the issue of players respecting each other Tuesday night when Red Wing forward Tomas Holmstrom needed 13 stitches to close a gash on his forehead. Holmstrom was slammed into the boards on a tag-team hit from the Ducks' Rob Niedermayer and Chris Pronger.

"I don't care how much is on the line at any time, you have to look after the other player," Babcock said at the time. "When he doesn't see you and you decide you're going to bury his head off the turn buckle, that's a decision you make."

Where's the respect?

Neidermyer and Pronger double teamed him. It was a setup and they both should be suspended. Playoffs or not!

One game, that's a joke! That panel should be ashamed of themselves!! What message does that send? How different is it from the Bertuzzi incident? You can be sure that if Holmstrom was carried off in a stretcher the suspension would have been more severe. I don't know who is more the coward; the NHL or Pronger! Now it will be revenged on the ice...

NO he shoudln't be suspended, he was just setting the tone for the rest of the series.

I am disappointed that he only received a 1 game suspension. Pronger is a PROFESSIONAL player. I have NO respect for a player that can't maintain a level of professionalism. There is no need to injuire because one is frustrated with the situation of the game. I don't think that Proger should have been the only one to have been suspended. Neidemeyer should have been as well.

Yes!! for sure. It was an obvious intent to injure since his teamate had already taken Holmstrum out of the play>>>

rwilliston,

Perhaps you are right...or not. But I still think that kind of unnecessary aggression stems from some sort of psychological ego disorder. So please if you know a good Sports Psychologist, please refer them to the NHL. Pronger has no right to attack Holstrom (or any other player) in the manner that he did. Hockey IS a contact sport, but please--look again at the footage! No more character assassinations from me, his conduct speaks for itself!

First, a disclaimer: I'm a Michigan resident and die-hard Wings fan. That aside, I think it would be a travesty if Pronger isn't suspended. Niedermayer's hit was marginal at best, but Pronger's hit was vicious and obviously meant to seriously injure Holmstrom. I regret ever being relieved when that S.O.B. got up after being hit in the chest by a puck at the Joe several years ago. Obviously, Pronger's brush with death didn't instill any respect for life. Campbell and Bettman: If you don't suspend Pronger, you shouldn't be surprised if they are carrying a Duck off on a stretcher, and one of the Wings off in handcuffs in Game 4. Put a stop to it before it gets out of hand.

A head shot is a head shot and if Todd Bertuzzi was ex-communicated from the NHL for his "cheap shot" , then so should Cris Pronger.

There is no difference, also, this series will get very unrully if the NHL does not make the right decision, don't forget what lea up to the Bertuzzi incident.

I don't like cowardly intents to injure, regardless who does it. To offer a deterent for possible future like acts, the league should suspend Pronger for at least one game!

Pronger should be suspended. Imagine the damage he could have done, 13 stitches was about the best-case-scenario for Holmstrom. Pronger has no class. The guy showed he had no class the way backed out on his word in Edmonton and then proceeded to publicly demand a trade days after the playoff run. He also ran one of the classiest guys, Stevie Y and last night injured another class act. Pronger could learn a lesson or two from all the people he's tried to hurt over the years.
