Is there a lack of respect in the NHL?
Wed, May 16, 2007

Detroit coach Mike Babcock raised the issue of players respecting each other Tuesday night when Red Wing forward Tomas Holmstrom needed 13 stitches to close a gash on his forehead. Holmstrom was slammed into the boards on a tag-team hit from the Ducks' Rob Niedermayer and Chris Pronger.

"I don't care how much is on the line at any time, you have to look after the other player," Babcock said at the time. "When he doesn't see you and you decide you're going to bury his head off the turn buckle, that's a decision you make."

Where's the respect?

I don't understand why some people refer to Pronger as a great defenceman, is he a good defenceman, probably, is he great, no where near. He is certainly not in the league of a Bobby Orr or Coffey. Pronger is a pylon and the only thing he's got going for him is that he's learned positional play. The hit was vicious, worse than Bertuzzi on Moore and the fact that Holmstrom came back to play shyouldn't affect his punishment.

One game is not nearly enough. It should have been at least the rest of the series against Detroit and maybe even the rest of the playoffs if Anaheim goes to the cup finals.

Brian Burke looked pathetic trying to describe hit on TV and explaining why his organization did not agree with the suspension.

It was a dirty hit, plain and simple and Pronger deserved a longer suspension. When is the NHL brass going to learn?
Mike Pelletier, 2007-05-17 09:20:32

I guess Pronger nows understands the expression "what goes around comes around." Remember the hit he took form Teemu Selanne at Salt Lake? I'm pretty sure he felt Selanne should have been suspended ...

Mr. Hugh

I am so tired of the excuse that one player is taller than the other. Does this equat to giving the taller player the right to head shot while others can't? NO! Pronger can't control his height, but he can control where his elbows go. He deserved what he got. Period. Good for Colin Campbell.

Pronger is a dirty player. he has done this before. The game was out of reach for the Ducks and both Neidermeyer and Pronger took a run at the best player of the night. It was an attempt to injure. Pronger should be gone for the rest of the series. Anaheim is a cheap, dirty team because that is what Brian Burke loves. They will never win the cup.

He was trying to injure. It was a plain shot to the head. He sould get at least three games.

Not this time, Brian Burke! He's taken us down this road before. I thought maybe he learned something from that experience, but no! He will continue to consider himself a cut above, but ergo last time, I think few would agree.

Repeat after me, Brian: "Chris Pronger went over the line. It's unfortunate that a player was injured, but great that he was later able to return. As sorry as we are to lose Chris for next game, we both support and will abide by the League's decision."

Now, wouldn't that have made more sense than his mockery? And, it could have been a lot worse! Brian Burke, of all people, is surely wise enough to understand(?)

I think that the punishment was enough for the hit. I really don't think that he had the intention of cause bodily harm. We have all watched hockey for most of our lives and in my case i have grown up in an OHL arena. Every guy that steps out on to the ice knows what can happen. We have all seen worse hits and injuries are all part of the game. Yes it Prongers hit was bit out of line...He got his game suspension. A fitting punishment

One game is about right. If it costs Anaheim the series so be it. The sport is bigger than this player and its integrity must be protected.

Pronger shouldn't get a suspension. It's not his fault that Holmstrom started to fall/leaned low when Pronger hit him. Pronger IS taller and Holmstrom fell into the hit. The headshot was NOT intentional and should not be suspendable
