Is there a lack of respect in the NHL?
Wed, May 16, 2007

Detroit coach Mike Babcock raised the issue of players respecting each other Tuesday night when Red Wing forward Tomas Holmstrom needed 13 stitches to close a gash on his forehead. Holmstrom was slammed into the boards on a tag-team hit from the Ducks' Rob Niedermayer and Chris Pronger.

"I don't care how much is on the line at any time, you have to look after the other player," Babcock said at the time. "When he doesn't see you and you decide you're going to bury his head off the turn buckle, that's a decision you make."

Where's the respect?

Of course there is a lack of respect in the NHL. Coaches are telling the players to be physical and play the body every shift, well there are alot of players that dont know how to give a body check properly so they hit from behind of go low for the knees.

Also the instigator rule needs to be scrapped and go back to letting the players police the game and there wont be any of these dirty hits.

With the players equipment these days they know they probably wont get hurt so they play a little bit more on the edge. Some guys look like they should be playing middle line backer in the NFL instead of the NHL.

I think its kind of funny when I hear people say that the Americans dont like the fighting, look at the sports they watch: boxing, ufc fighting, hunting shows, sports that are I think more violent than two players going toe to toe, it is rare when a player is injured in a fight.

Go Sens Go!!!!!

Players respect for one another has consistently gone down ever since the influx of European players and their stickwork as well as the stupid instigator rule. Remove the instigator rule and players will know they will be held accountable for their actions.

C'mon lets be realistic here people, that hit was entirely planned and carried out like a Execution! Fact #1)Neidermeyer & Pronger are world Class D-Men. When the puck comes up the sideboards it is the wingers responsibility to go fetch it along the boards in the attack zone. The center stays low and the offensive defenseman stays high. Never should both defensemen attack the puck so high in the zone. Where was the coverage in front of the net? Why would 2 Norris winning defensman not recognize that defensive collapse? Unless it was Pre-meditated and planned! I am a Red Wing season ticket holder and 1 game is fine for Scott! But 5 would have been more in line for Prongs. I used to think he was great and World Class but the more I see he cannot stand losing and is such a poor sport World Class is a bit of a stretch! Hey Chris, I think NO CLASS more aptly describes your behavior!

What ever happened to just playing the game, isnt there enough violence surrounding us, I think the suspension he received isnt enough? When is it gonna end, its not WAR its a GAME!!!

Hey Barney, how can you say Chris's hit was a cheap shot on one hand, and then ask me to come and play in your league so that you could do the same to me. By the way, I am a girl that plays hockey and I enjoy the company of men like Chris Pronger, not whiny whimps like you. You are not in my league honey.

Deano, Holstrom was already checked and probably going to fall on the ice when Pronger came in and nailed him face first into the glass. How do propose that he protected himself from Pronger? Should he have eyes in the back of his head?? or should he have sprouted wings to get out of the way?? Did you even see the play or did you just assume that because you can read you have a right to say something you know nothing about. Pronger should have been fined and out for the rest of the year. He could see already that Holstrom was out of the play and should have not made the check. It's not that hard to turn and avoid checking from behind. I hope that when Pronger does come back someone gives him a bit of his own medicine. WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND!

so holmstrom got hit who the hell cares!they should now go after thar sob chelios and the so called dominator hasek the wings are cry babys now and always will be hockey is a tough game and as we say in canada if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen! go ducks go

Yes I agree with the punishment to Pronger. The reason I had quit watching hockey before the lockout was that it was too violent. With the new rules in place I feel it was less violent, and resume watching hockey. If it is allowed again I will not watch anymore. Hockey is a sport, and should treated as such. I hate to see a man hit and incapacitated laying on a hockey rink . These man have families and friends and should be treated with dignity.
E. Bruneau, 2007-05-17 12:09:48

Should be 3 games. Suppose Bertuzzi had made a hit like that, they would have suspended him for the remaining playoffs. Pronger is no angel.
Gary, 2007-05-17 11:42:22

Pronger's hit may have caused damage but in the NHL you can't let your gaurd down or turn your back! Holmstrom should have protected himself expecting a hit instead of looking at his pass. The league as of today is still FULL contact, not too long ago players protected themselves first then made a play, too bad players are getting hurt playing like there is no contact.
