Was signing Sundin a good move?
Tue, June 12, 2007

Mats Sundin will remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs for one more season.

The Leafs captain signed a one-year contract worth US$5.5 million on Tuesday, raising questions about Sundin's future with the organization.

Was this a prudent move by the Maple Leafs? Do they move their team leader at or before the trade deadline if the club is on the outside looking in concerning the Eastern playoff standings?

Have your say in our forum.

Sundin opts for one-year deal

Sudin needs to get rid of the Leafs...They've wasted his career.

If they could wiggle out of his no trade clause for his option year. Trade him after picking up the option for some good young talent, like Rick Nash and a first round pick. If not, he'll walk away from the club and the Leafs (fans) will have nothing to show for the near quarter billion dollars he's sucked out of our economy.

mats should be offered the same as his swedish team, no more.

trade or sell bryan mc cabe now!

The Leafs will not win the cup with or without Sundin next year. The whole team is flawed. So don't let that be the deciding factor. I think he has been Toronto's best player night in and night out and a class act for this team for all these years. It would be a travesty to see him go down the road like Sittler, being shuffled around the league from team to team. Darryl deserved more respect and Mats deserves more respect than these bozos are showing. He wants to retire a Leaf and I would make it happen. $5.5 million for a guy who was still Toronto's best player at the end of last year (he was injured?) is a good deal. I take that deal in a heart beat.

Time to move on. If Sundin couldn't win the cup for toronto in the last 10s years, he won't be able to in the future. Save the money for someone with more mileage.

If Mats will accept a huge pay cut then yes keep him if not trade him for whatever you can get for him. Fergie made bad deals last summer in over paying Kubina for $ 5 million a year, he looked horrible last year, and McCabe for $6.5 million. He is a power play specialist only, looks lost in his own end as do all Leaf defencemen. Hire someone to run the defence that can actually teach them how to play in there own end. They get running around in there own and end up getting scored on or taking a bad penalty.

Fergie should have went after 2 or 3 wingers last summer instead of signing 2 stiffs in Kubina and Gil. Neither has the speed to keep up with the new NHL and take bad hooking or holding penalties!!

Leaf hockey is turning me off and making me watch any other game that is on tv. I may have to get centre ice package for next year so I dont have to watch the Leafs all year cuz it will be another low scoring boring team that wont make the playoffs again for 3 years in a row and no hope for the future!!!!

The GM should try for a StevieY special and see if Mats will take a pay cut so they can sign some more talent. Mats has another year or two in him and the leafs really need skilled vets to help develop their youth. Getting rid of Mats would be a huge mistake. JFJ has done a good job. He came in and did what he said he would and now we have a young team with good chemistry. So we didn't make the playoffs. Big deal. This team is a hell of a lot more fun to watch than it used to be. Oh, and they need to get a good goalie coach to help Raycroft with his positioning.

Sundin is a quality player. Unfortunately, the leafs have never enabled him to become the best player that he can be. He needs quality wingers - Antropov and Ponikarovsky are not first line players. If the Leafs are not going to surround him with the talent he needs, then they should let him go to a place that will. (P.S - the Leafs should fire Ferguson and hire someone who Leaf fans trust and presents themselves in a genuine manner.)

you guys are ridonkulous for even having this topic on your website, much less the lead story. Stanley Cup playoffs are still on by the way... Just FYI.

Should have traded him when he was worth something. Now they are stuck with an over priced, balding asset.
