Was signing Sundin a good move?
Tue, June 12, 2007

Mats Sundin will remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs for one more season.

The Leafs captain signed a one-year contract worth US$5.5 million on Tuesday, raising questions about Sundin's future with the organization.

Was this a prudent move by the Maple Leafs? Do they move their team leader at or before the trade deadline if the club is on the outside looking in concerning the Eastern playoff standings?

Have your say in our forum.

Sundin opts for one-year deal

No team has ever won a Stanley Cup with a European captain ... enough said! Also, no team has won the cup that stinks ... more enough said!

This is a fine deal if they follow through with JFJs comment about surrounding him with some better players. The defense is secure except in goal (still questionable) and fi we had a second line who knows? Mats has shown once again that he cares about the Leafs and is a quality human being.

No it wasnt, not at $5.5 million a year. Sundin will produce even less next year than he did this year, what did he do down the stretch 2 goals in the last 17 or 18 games ? Thats almost a quarter of a season with a whopping 2 goals. Ferguson has overpaid for Sundin just like he did with Kubina and McCabe, them 3 players cost the Leafs roughly $ 15 - 16 million a year! Now Ferguson doesnt have much money to sign any good free agents this summer. I guess we will be seeing more Marlies wearing Leaf jersey this coming year. Gonna be yet another long boring season with the Leafs struggling to score goals. At $ 5.5 million I think Feguson could have signed 2 good young players and started the rebuilding process, but no he decides to sign Sundin at pretty much any cost and miss the playoffs for 3 or 4 years in a row now.

Wonder if I can get any Raptors tickets next year, at least they will be competitive and exciting team to watch. Time to start considering wether to buy a dish and get the centre ice package so I can pick which teams I want to watch instead of the old, slow and boring Leafs!!!!

what a waste of money, the leafs could have acquired two quality players for that amount,Canadian players even. It is about time the Leafs learn to build a team around Canadian players like the Ducks, and maybe they too could win THE CUP.

I can't believe it!!! Sundin is signed! WOW!!!! This is my happiest day ever! Which way to the Stanley Cup parade?

Let's see... old, past your prime, overpaid... Why wouldn't the Leafs re-sign him? I'm just surprised they didn't give him a guaranteed long term contract.

Mats must want to get a jump start on his golf game next year. That's the only reason he'd waste his time signing with the Leafs.

Should have traded Sundin at the trade deadline last year. Could have gotten a good young player and a few first round draft choices. Now we can't trade him at all with the no trade clause. JFJ has no clue in what he's doing and MLSE doesn't care if the Leafs win or not b/c they'll still be making a great return on the Leafs. Look at the Raptors. People stopped paying attention to them and MLSE began to see losses with them and look what they did.

Mats Sundin is coming back for another 2 years, this makes me extremely happy, he is he best! For some who are not diehard fans, he is only good when he scores, for me, a true fan, he has outdone himself over and over again.

SUNDIN RULES!
