Was signing Sundin a good move?
Tue, June 12, 2007

Mats Sundin will remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs for one more season.

The Leafs captain signed a one-year contract worth US$5.5 million on Tuesday, raising questions about Sundin's future with the organization.

Was this a prudent move by the Maple Leafs? Do they move their team leader at or before the trade deadline if the club is on the outside looking in concerning the Eastern playoff standings?

Have your say in our forum.

Sundin opts for one-year deal

The guy is going to be 37 with a bad hip and apparently wants 5.5 or 6 million for 2 years. Anyone remember a guy named Mogilny? Leafs should say thanks for everything you did Mats, but don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Yes!!!!! Sorry to say Sundin is NOT a leader and never will be. I thought when the Leafs picked him as captain they had made a big mistake. He has been captain for what 10 years now and Leafs havent done anything.Quebec had Sakic,Forsberg and Sundin and who did they trade ? Mats. They knew Sundin wouldnt be as great as Sakic and Forsberg so thats why they traded him.Trading Wendel for Sundin was a huge mistake and as far as I am concerned and started the down fall of the Leafs. Clark was a leader in every sense of the word.Sorry Mats time to move on to another team,a fresh start maybe the best thing for you and the Leafs. Sundin is the second most over rated player after Lindros and his entering the league as the next great one. Sundin doesnt even average a point a game even though he is the first line center and on the first power play unit. All that ice time and still less than a point a game.Sign him then trade him to a more offensive team and lets see what he can do cuz I am still not convinced he is a top ten center in the NHL.

How many times could Mats have played out his option, and taken the free agency route to a cup contender? After all the loyalty he has shown to this franchise, and the city of Toronto, a little bit of the same coming back for him would be the right thing. If we trade him, do we guarantee ourselves the cup? No! Sundin is a class-act who deserves his name on the big trophy, . . . as a Leaf!

He's been their captain for what, 10 years? A Maple Leaf for even longer. What have they done? Nothing. Not even an appearance in the Finals. He's not a great leader and never has been. A great player yes, but missing the x-factor that seperates the great from the merely good. Now he's 36 and may have a bum hip. I say, operate then evaluate then grab a big free agent to replace him. Regardless of what happens with his hip, Sundins career is nearing an end. This will merely accelerate it.Peca should be moved also.

It's unfortunate that we are talking about letting one of the all time best leaf captains go when he should be retiring a leaf. I realize that the new NHL financial model doesn't allow for this but it is too bad regardless. Not only one of the best leaf captains of all time but also one of the best leafs of all time period.

Slow news day in Leaf Nation. They should have traded him at the deadline.

Leafs are a one man team and need to rebuild.
