Was signing Sundin a good move?
Tue, June 12, 2007

Mats Sundin will remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs for one more season.

The Leafs captain signed a one-year contract worth US$5.5 million on Tuesday, raising questions about Sundin's future with the organization.

Was this a prudent move by the Maple Leafs? Do they move their team leader at or before the trade deadline if the club is on the outside looking in concerning the Eastern playoff standings?

Have your say in our forum.

Sundin opts for one-year deal

Keep Sundin for one more year...but Kubina for 5 mil???...are you nuts!! get rid of him and his inflated Salary and buy some real talent!

Who cares! Mats is definitely a class act with boatloads of talent, it's just too bad the Leaf's brass & the teacher's pension fund are ONLY concerned with 1 thing... MONEY IN THEIR POCKETS! We won't be seeing the cup here for a long time... that is until the ownership see's a significant drop in ticket sales as we hit them in the pocketbook as a show that we want them to build a team that is focused on actually Winning the cup and NOT just making the playoffs... or not!!!!

"I can't believe it!!! Sundin is signed! WOW!!!! This is my happiest day ever! Which way to the Stanley Cup parade?

Bruno, 2007-06-12 14:46:05"

The Stanley Cup parade will be East, West or South of Toronto for many years before it ever sees Yonge St. in Toronto Bruno, so you shouldn't get TOO excited...

Mats is a class act and agree totally with pr's comments. He is still worth this money and lets face it the Leafs are still in rebuilding mode. The fans should appreciate everything he has done, that smile that brightens the whole arena on a goal and if indeed this is his last year, lets give him a great send off. Trading or not signing Mats is not going to win the Stanley Cup next year and a one year deal gives flexibility for the following year. I'm OK with Kubina & Gill, but the McCabe deal was an absolute stinker. I doubt JFJ did it on his own, but that deal will haunt the Leafs until it terminates.

John Wilson you hit the nail on the head. The Leafs could never win with Mats. I don't think anyone has ever won the cup without a Canadian as Captain.

The Leafs need to overhaul the team. Sundin had a decent winger in Roberts, and I like the Antropov Ponikarovsky combo, but the team is weak all over. RAYCROFT DOESN'T STOP ALL THE PUCKS HE SHOULD. (whereas, Giguere does, according the Scott Niedermayer, who should know) Try for Giguere. And if you can move/trade demote McCabe. He needs to play better on D.

Same old team going nowhere. This is John Ferguson Jr.'s swan song - why didn't he go after Drury or Briere instead of signing a 36 year old has been? This will be three years in a row out of the playoffs. And - oh,yea, nothing since 1967.

The numerous problems with the Leafs cannot, in any way, be pinned on Mats. He remains an extremely skilled player and a great leader. Having said that, you can't name one good winger on either side he's EVER had to play with him (e.g., Jonas Hogland, Antropov, Ponikarovsky, and the list goes on and on). The fourth liners he gets stuck with would make Gretzky look ordinary. The only way Mats will ever reach his potential is on another team. Mats is certainly worth the money; JFJ, Kubina, Gill, McCabe, Antropov, not so much!

Rick Nash for Sundin? Who's dreaming? There is not a manager in the NHL who would make that trade. Rick Nash is one of the youngest most talented players in the league, Sundin has been great, great respect for the man,but I don't think Sundin will carry Columbus to the Stanley Cup! Rick Nash can! Wishful thinking Todd. I would be in 7th heaven if Fergie pulled that trade off, but it ain't going to happen!

As a Sens Fan I think it is great.. The Leafs have not won a Playoff series with a healthy Sundin in the last 7 years.. Check it out !! They have won 2 series and both times he had a supposed 'injury'.. he hurries back and they lose the next series.. Well Done. Sign him for 10 years please..
