Did the Canucks make a mistake in firing Burke?
Wed, April 25, 2007

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Brian Burke sat in his office bare of Vancouver Canucks memorabilia and said he still doesn't have a clue.

"You could give me sodium pentothal and ask me why I got fired and I couldn't tell you."

But this seems to be a different year. And this is definitely a different series with Burke going against the team he built in Vancouver and his GM protege Dave Nonis in Game 1 between the Canucks and Ducks here tonight.

"There's a storyline there because I worked there, a number of the players are players I brought in. Dave Nonis was my right-hand man and is my best friend," he said of the Canucks GM who added the final piece Vancouver never had, a big time goaltender. "There's a story. But any bitterness or angst on my part isn't part of it."

Wow, to Buzzilinear - The Oilers were a playoff bound team until 1 week before the trade deadline. Any points that Vancouver got from Edmonton were hard fought.

Now on to Burke, he made some good moves in Anaheim this year, but his predisisor did alot more, he was given a team of young hard working players, and only needed a couple vetrans to pull it all together. Like Pronger and Neidlemeyer, its hard to have a bad team with 2 great defence men and players up front that can score!

Yes it was a huge mistake. Burke rebuilt the Canucks from a laughing stock to a good young team with a bright future with players like the Sendins. I was shocked when I heard Burke was fired, but when he got the job with the Ducks I knew he would turn them around to, which he did in just over a year. He dumped Fedorovs big contract to Columbus and then made some good trades to get the Ducks to where they are now, a serious threat to win the cup this year!!! Great job Burke, how about coming to Toronto and working your magic here for us?!?!

The Canucks did the right thing. Burke is great at overpaying and destroying the farm system for short-term solutions. He almost left the Canucks hands tied with signings like Bertuzzi, Carter and Cloutier. Luckily, Nonis deftly pulled off a move to rid the team of Bertuzzi for LUONGO??? what a move, and then added depth while staying just inside the cup. I hate the Canucks but wow, what a year. Don't forget to thank the Oilers for all the points they handed you clowns during the regular season.

The day I heard Burke was fired by the 'Nucks, I knew it was a mistake. He assembled 1 heck of a team in Vancouver at the time and if it wasn't for some "other issues" they were serious cup contenders. Unless we don't know that BB was the 1 responsible for the Moore incident then what the heck was the reasoning? And now look at the turn around in Anaheim since he signed on there. Nice move Nucks, enjoy the 2nd round, your not going any further, at the hand of Brian's team no less.

I've been a Canucks fan since the day they entered the NHL, and I definitely believe that firing Burke was a huge mistake. The way it was done was completely classless too. It should have been far beneath the organization. For shame.

not a mistake...the Canucks are a better team now...just (still) lack a consistent scorer.

I don't know if I'd say he was reluctant to get a number 1 goalie. Any GM in the league would have taken the Luongo trade, it just didn't come up until after he left. Ending up on the winning side of the worst trade since Boston got rid of Thornton is more luck than relfective on the canucks GM. I'm sure if Florida had offered Luongo to Burke (for basically nothing) he would have taken him. Bertuzi was a good player before the lockout but with the obstruction rules his style of play doesn't make him dominant like he once was. On that note, has the Florida GM been fired yet? Trading away your franchise player for Bertuzzi, then trading him for a draft pick or something like that?

Brian Burke was not fired, his contract was not renewed. I love the guy but Nonis has done a pretty good job.
Scott Wilson, 2007-04-25 14:20:04

Burke is a good hockey guy but I don't think his firing is a mistake. During his reign, the Canucks won one playoff series and perennially underachieved during the playoffs. His downfall really goes to his reluctance to get a number one goalie.
