Are the playoffs less fun without the Leafs?
Wed, April 11, 2007

It can't be good for hockey when the Leafs miss the playoffs. It can't be good for hockey when Edmonton is out and Montreal is out. These cities are the lifeblood of the game.

So, now we watch, not certain where to turn. I'm vaguely interested in Vancouver-Dallas because this is Roberto Luongo's playoff debut. Same goes for Calgary-Detroit, mostly to see if the annual Red Wings collapse is upon us.

A playoffs without Toronto won't seem very much like playoffs at all.

Just when you think you've heard everything from a leaf fan you get this sorry exuse for a story shoved in your face. Typical Leaf fans!! Maybe they should just cancel the playoffs since the Leafs are'nt in them...give me a break. Someone fire this guy!!

I would like to nominate this column for the most ignorant piece of journalism this year. Give me a break! REAL hockey fans will watch the playoffs with or without the Leafs. Leafs fans had better get used to their team missing the playoffs, because it's going to keep happening.

Contrary to what other postings have said, Toronto IS the centre of the universe. So what if the Leafs are not in the playoffs? Unlike other Leaf fans, I am not crying about it. Why? We have many more teams to cheer on, and many more things to do in this great city. Raptors, Marlies, Argos, Blue Jays, Toronto FC, theatre, music, etc. I applaud all the other Canadian NHL teams that did make the playoffs --- I really do. But the nice thing is, we don't HAVE to care about the NHL. To all you in the *smaller* Canadian cities, the NHL is probably the only thing to see and do outside of Cable TV.

Every year the same thing. As soon as the Leafs are out these so called hockey fans stop watching, just when the best hockey is being played! Leaf fans and hockey fans are not the same thing thank god!

Everyone seems to read things into Simmons' columns that isn't there (I did it myself once). What he's saying is, for TORONTO fans it just isn't the same without the Leafs involved. And he's absolutely right. Hell, even Leaf-haters would love to see them in just to watch them be eliminated. Say what you will about Toronto (and I'm no Leaf fan by the way), they are loyal. To a fault. If they kept their rear-ends out of the seats for a season you KNOW there'd be fundamental changes made.

Leaf fans might as well get used to mediocrity for some time to come. As long as T.O. people keep supporting the "Laffs" and keep filling the ACC to watch an inferior club what incentive is there for the organization to acquire better talent ? It seems to be the "in" thing to do in Toronto though 'cause if you can say you attend the Laff games you must be a SOMEBODY. Real Leaf fans should take control and demand a rebuild. They could start with a general manager that knows something about hockey instead of the current model who is intent on making comments about the great rebuilding job they are presently doing. Go Flames Go !!

Boo Hoo!

I am so tired of the Leafs. Let's see some other teams for a change. I would like Hockey Night in Canada to show the Leafs occasionally, say one sixth of the games. Money talks, I guess. I would also like hockey commentators who weren't so Leafs oriented.

OMG!!! Has the Earth stopped revolving around the sun just because the Leafs weren't good enough to make it to the playoffs? Get a life Steve Simmons! I am so tired of the bleeding hearts from Toronto who somehow seem to think the rest of Canada gives a damn if one of their sports teams don;t make it to a championship game. Perhaps Mr. Simmons should look at a n atlas to realize that life does exist outside of Toronto and the Leafs!
Mike, 2007-04-11 15:25:09

I like that last comment about Bob Cole! Now maybe we won't have to listen to all the leaf fans who assume that you are a fan as well!!
Pete, 2007-04-11 15:22:51

who really gives a f***!

I really love coming online, having canoe as my homepage and then seeing this as the top story?? Toronto you arent the centre of the universe! get with it canoe people actually live in other parts of Canada not just Toronto
