Are you glad HNIC is staying on the CBC?
Mon, March 26, 2007

The CBC will announce later today that its longest-standing tradition — Hockey Night in Canada — is staying on the network for the foreseeable future.

The Sun has learned a news conference involving the CBC and the NHL has been called for noon today in Toronto to make the official announcement.

There had been widespread speculation for several months that CTV Globemedia would make a major push to take Hockey Night away from the CBC, which has carried the Saturday night series for more than 50 years. No program has a longer history on the public broadcaster's airwaves.

CBC to keep NHL contract

YES! I am glad the CBC is keeping HNIC because for all hockey fans in Canada it is the only station in all of Canada that is available without cable. No matter where I got in Canada I can watch the GOOD OLD HOCKEY GAME. As for fighting in hockey, yes it is a part of the sport. I agree that it can get out of hand but if anything has to change it is teaching the players at a young age how to take a check and to give a clean one.

Change the name to Hockey Night in Toronto and forget this Canada crap. It hasn't been HNIC for about 10 years

Great for Leafs fans and anyone over 35. Hopefully CBC will see this brush with death as an opportunity to freshen up HNIC and draw in some younger viewers.

I'm glad to hear it. I get tired of the Toronto bias but CBC is no worse then the networks in Canada and probably not has bad as TSN. I think CBC is the best at producing hockey games and although I miss Chris Cuthbert, I'll take Jim Hughson any night of the week. Similarily, the less I hear of Gord Miller, Darren Dreger, Tie Domi, and James Duthie, the better.

Glad to see the CBC keep HNIC. In general I never watch CBC except for HNIC it would have been the death blow for CBC. More importantly we won't see Bob Mckenzie and Perrie Mcquire yelling at us through our TV's on a saturday night. I'll take ron and don thank you very much

Hearing this made me cry. I want to see more then just the Leafs. It's a crown corp, they shouldn't be bias to a team. The announcers are terrible who don't know who's on the ice, or how to pronounce their names. CTV, you should have mae a bigger bid to save our HNIC!

I too would miss the opening song-it's been around too long to give up. As for Cherry- I can't wait to hear him during the playoffs, but couldn't care less during the regular season. For those that think listening to Neale and Cole is tough, Hughson is just about as bad if you're an Oilers fan. It is very obvious the guy hates the Oilers as it doesn't matter who the Oilers are playing (especially Vancouver) we just can't do enough for good praise. I'd rather have HNIC than listen to Pierre McGuire rant all the time though.

The only reason it's Leafs every Saturday is that's the team that pulls in the highest ratings. CBC's no dummy - obviously you want to air the game that's going to pull in the highest ratings - that's why you see the Leafs. If you hate them, that's too bad, but it's strictly a business decision...

cherry, mcclean and hnit is a staple in every canadian home. they should have signed on for 20 more years. go leafs go

You mean, HNIT. My tax dollars subsidize 6 nights of 7 to promote canadian content. But Saturday night, there's another set of rules, it's all leaf blue all the time, and the rest of Canada doesn't matter. Why a supposed national broadcaster would not promote 6+ healthy canadian teams, I don't know. I guess it's HNIT for leaf fans and a night at the movies for the rest of us.
