Vancouver celebrates while Toronto commiserates, leaving more than a few No. 13- wearing, blue-and-white-loving fans crying in their snowbanks.
However, rather than freaking out, consider the slap it would have been to see your longtime captain wearing the bleu, blanc et rouge.
Deal with reality and move forward, look forward, and watch with interest.
This Thursday, the big Swede is due to join his new squad in Lotus Land.
While there is no timeline for Sundin to suit up, he is not one to wait around. The 'Nucks are home Dec. 28 to the Senators and the Flyers on Dec. 30, but perhaps a road debut is in the cards. They play back-to-back games Jan. 1 and 2 in Nashville and Atlanta respectively.
These dates pale in the glow that is Feb. 21. Step aside Willy Wonka - the NHL equivalent of the Golden Ticket reads: Canucks versus Leafs at the Air Canada Centre. That will truly be a Hockey Night in Canada.
No one should be surprised that things played out this way as his reasons were clear for taking this offer. Vancouver wanted him the most, offered the most money and had the most cap room.
Just one question remains: It's a one-year deal. So, are we going to go through this whole thing again next year?
