Campaigns in the red zone

Hockey moms have been covered, so now U.S. presidential hopefuls John McCain and Barack Obama are going after tailgaters and armchair quarterbacks on Monday Night Football.

Yes -- just when you thought you might escape the final night of what has been a two-year barrage of U.S. election coverage by watching a little football - forget it!

The Monday nighter will serve as the last stop for both candidates prior to their match-up at the polls.

Senators McCain and Obama will be interviewed during ESPN's halftimes.

While this Canadian, like many I'm sure, is exhausted by all of the jockeying for position, save for the hilarity on Saturday Night Live, I still think this a cool idea.

More than anything this is a good plan because of who will conduct the interview, Chris Berman is a master at making any topic fun while finding a way to get to the heart of the matters.

Berman is great at connecting with and getting to the human side of athletes and they are almost as conditioned to "say nothing" as the politicians, right?

At least George W. Bush won't be "backbackbackbackback!"
