I'll admit it. I really wanted Cleveland to beat Boston in the ALCS.
There -- I said it.
Now, don't go thinking it's something personal about the city of Boston -- I love it. Boston is a beautiful town, one of the top three U.S. cities to visit and, if you ask me, every ball fan needs to make a trip to Fenway Park at some point -- it is special.
What irks this sports fan is how the crew that currently plays at Fenway has become so arrogant when mounting its "comeback."
Specifically I am done with the schtick seen game in and game out from Manny Ramirez.
No, it's not the extra baggy uniform -- however ridiculous it looks -- or the dreadlocks (puh-lease). It's not even the post-game comments he makes that seem to fly in the face of every true team player.
What bugs me about Manny is how he loves to admire his work.
When Ramirez gets into one, and knows it is leaving the yard, he cannot help but congratulate himself in the moment.
No. 24 connects on the big cut, flips he bat, extends his arms, palms up, as if to say "love me people, I am the man" and tops it all off with the slow stroll out of the batter's box followed closely by the point-and-jog. I can accept the celebration if it's a walk-off, but in the first inning? Or when he makes it a four-run deficit?
This egomaniacal display is wrong on so many levels. It punctuates exactly why I will cheer against this team.
To make matters worse, it seems these Manny-isms are beginning to rub off on teammates. A prime example is the sad display set by David "Big Papi" Ortiz on Sunday, who walked into the dugout wearing his "champagne goggles."
He started celebrating too early; the outcome might have been decided, but the game wasn't complete.
Boys, it's all just a little too much. How about a little sportsmanship instead of gamesmanship?
Please note: I would be cheering for Colorado regardless.
The Rockies have Canuck Jeff Francis. Until the Bosox are served a little humble pie, I, for one, will be cheering against the cocky comeback kids.
