Toronto fans can catch up

Here's hoping you were able to tune out over the long weekend and relax. No BlackBerry, no cell, no TV...

For those who were able to step away from the information highway -- here are a few Toronto sports quick hits to catch you up.

Toronto Maple Leafs:

Toronto hockey fans will be relieved today as they realize that while they dipped into lakes somewhere in cottage country, the club did dip into the free agent pool. Jason Blake is a Leaf. Last year this gritty forward caused no end of headaches for Leafs head coach Paul Maurice while having a breakout season, scoring 40 goals. No TML player scored 30 last year, so this guy should come in handy on either Mats Sundin's line or that of Kyle Wellwood.

GM John Ferguson said he's still looking to upgrade his talent by way of trades. Interesting.

Toronto Blue Jays:

While the team's consistently inconsistent play keeps it on the outside looking in at the wild card race, Jays fans do have something to applaud; the naming of Alex Rios to the All-Star game in San Francisco.

Rios earned a write-in spot last year but couldn't play thanks to an aggressive infection in his foot.

This year the player who needs fans to log on to MLB.com and vote him onto the American League squad is none other than Roy Halladay. I could insert a thousand words on why this guy deserves your taking the time to do this, but I believe any real Jays' fan wouldn't need my prodding.

Point and click people -- just do it for Doc.

Toronto Argonauts:

Our long weekend began with a bang at Rogers Centre and the season opener for the Argos. A great game by all accounts, it was an edge-of-your-seat, big-play, huge-turnover, questionable-decision-filled affair.

A game where Damon Allen looked as though he was playing in quicksand and Michael Bishop was lightning quick -- the latter certainly emerged as the worthy No. 1 for the Boatmen.

My favourite fallout from this tilt is how my friend and Argos season ticket holder, Don Landry, lost our friendly bet and he will be donning some B.C. orange at a Blue Jays game in the very near future.

Make sure you are tuned in for that with cell phone cameras at the ready.
